Colonoscopy and cycling...

I have seen some posts on this, but just got into the group and need to ask.
I am 49 years old. Getting colonoscopy for the first time this Friday and would like to cycle very soon after. I will be cycling on a 4 day multi ride the week after.
How soon after the colonoscopy can I ride my bike again on long distance and every day for 4 days.
Thanks!

Based on my single experience the remaining effects from the anesthesia would be the only limiting factor. I'd give it 24 hours. YMMV

Had one last year, back on the bike two days after having it done. There should be no pain afterward, maybe just a little gas from the air the doc uses to expand the colon.

i had one 2 months ago.
anesthesia mostly wore off ASAP, maybe 1 min after they wheeled me out of the procedure room. i woke up when they were transporting me from the procedure room to my starting room. i felt like i could drive home after they released me, 30 min later.
actual procedure took 45 min.
they told me no heavy exertion for 24 hours. after that they told me live as normal. i actually rode 30 miles 2 days after.
my bowl movement was very dark the next day from bleeding and lightened up to normal in 2 days. no pain or discomfort in any way shape or form. the doctors office called me the next day for follow up on any problems.

suggestion eat something solid before drinking liquids after it's done. liquid will flow thru you asap if you don't.

This is really a 50+ question. I've had two of them. There's no reason you can't ride the next day.

I had one on a Weds morning, Thursday night I went to my "torture clinic" working out for 90 minutes on a stationary bike and my own bike on a trainer. No problems.

My brother-in-law had an upper GI endoscopy and a colonoscopy done in the same day. I told him to make sure they do the upper part first so he didn't wake up from anesthesia with a funny taste in his mouth...

I have an unfortunate family history which requires me to have a colonoscopy every five years… Started at 42 years old. I curse my father.

To be blunt: your ass will never know that it has been violated. There is no pain. The prep is no fun, and you will need to sleep off the anesthesia – so the day of the procedure is a complete write off. You’ll be on the bike the next day if you wish.

Good luck with it! It’s a good preventative measure, especially if you are at risk. Finding any issues early dramatically improves your prospects. But they probably won’t find anything, and then you can feel great for another five years or 10 years.

PS: If you are male, make sure that the physician examines your prostate while in there. It’s an ideal opportunity, since you will be unconscious.

PPS: arrange for someone to drive you home. The anesthesia is very unpredictable.

Some docs will do a colonoscopy w/o anesthesia if you so choose. Mine did. Apparently lots of folks in Europe go that route. In that case, one could ride really soon afterward.

The anesthesia is the best part! .

But yeah, no driving or riding that day because of it. I was well enough that we stopped on the way home to have a big breakfast burrito! Hit the spot after the prep routine.

Had one nine years ago (due for my last one next year) with conscious sedation. Test in the morning. Short bike ride early evening.

You’ll be fine later in the afternoon. Seriously, it’s no big deal.

The colonoscopy does not necessarily require anesthesia, mine didn't. I watched the procedure on TV

I probably could have ridden later the same day, but likely would have gotten lost and not remembered any of it.

How about the at home "Colo-Guard" test? Takes 5 minutes.

For one thing, it's not for people with certain risk factors.

Enjoy your rides. That's the prep ride, the oscopy ride and Saturday's ride. I second Koyote's DRE suggestion (Digital Rectal Exam) of Prostate. I would also suggest having a PSA test at time of yearly blood work.

How in the world did you wait until the next day???

I was ready to eat the bedrail the morning of the procedure. I pigged out on the way home from the hospital. About an hour or two after waking up I was fine to do whatever I wanted.

I didn't wait to eat. Just meant that I didn't feel any Thanksgiving meal guilt the next day because I was so drained. I was so confident that there was nothing left in me the morning of that I took the bus to the hospital.

fwiw - I was raking snow off my roof the afternoon of my morning procedure. I don't recall any discomfort in the saddle area
