Indoor trainers headroom

Quick question

Ive a basement with limited headroom, around 1.8 m 5’11”. Would that be enough to install a trainer , such as one of the wahoos. I’m 1.8 myself so just brush the ceiling if I’m not careful.

thanks

You won't want to stand up and sprint, but you'll be about as low riding the trainer as you are riding outside. Depending on the trainer, you might be an inch or two higher. On a direct drive trainer like the KICKR, your front wheel is on the ground and your back triangle is at usual road height. Some others provide a riser block for the front wheel and you're an inch or two above ground level.

With a wheel on trainer, or rollers, your wheels will be that much higher off the ground.

You might be OK for seated or aero position, but, as mentioned by Athens80, remember not to stand up. Could get kinda claustrophobic in those tight quarters but it could be done. I'm about your height and my basement ceiling is at about 6' 4" and I think my clearance is minimal using a CycleOps wind trainer (old school).

Thanks both.

@Myosmith, with 6’4” clearance and assuming you don’t stand up too often is it a comfortable experience . How long are you average sessions.

I can stand as long as I keep my elbows bent in a semi-aero position. My indoor sessions don't tend to be long, maybe an hour to an hour at most. When I'm stuck indoors I tend to work on complementary exercises like stretching, yoga/pilates, weights, etc. Time on the trainer is mainly to prevent backsliding. If I can ride outdoors I do. I'd rather ride in rain or freezing conditions before giving in to the basement cave.

Position your head between the rafters ?

Not meant to be a joke. When I do pullups in the basement I have the bar centered between two rafters so my head doesn't hit the ceiling.

I have about 6'-8" of ceiling clearance in the portion of my basement where I train, and I'm 5'-11" myself. And I can comfortably stand for sprints on my Wahoo Kickr.

Like others have said, riding with a Kickr is about the same height as riding your bike outdoors. There is no front wheel block needed. Have a friend measure your height when you're on your bike in your riding position.
