Giant road bike, maybe an '80s RSxxx from the time when Giant was just going out on its own after having built for Schwinn for years. Never saw a lot of these out there but they launched the company as we know it.

Nah, belongs to one of the volunteers nearby at a park shelter helping city kids on an outing. Karma will help keep it there.

Just call me Carrie
Sitting in a coffee shop in Boston for a meeting, I spotted a Univega Competizione outside. I wanted to sit there until the owner returned so I could chat with them. Alas, the meeting ended too soon and I had to get home.

Sat next to a lady riding a Bridgestone Submariner mixte at the traffic light. That stainless lugged frame stands out!

At work today I noticed this Schwinn Varsity mixte outside of a local shop where expertly trained, older Dominican cigar rollers make hand-rolled, quality cigars from what I hear (I do not smoke). It is a unique place and the gentlemen who work there are fantastic. There are always one or two bikes locked up by workers and/or visitors but this is the first time I noticed the Varsity. I found the owner inside and he was both proud of his bike and surprised that I knew what it is. He said that he bought it sometime back in the ‘80s when he immigrated to the U.S. and has enjoyed it ever since then. He may want to check that back tire though... I just noticed that.

That Varsity is not a mixte. Ladies' frame or just a stepthrough, but it's missing the lateral tubes of a true mixte.

That wider shot is such a quintessential New York street scene. Straighten the angle a couple degrees, crop it to a nice square (1:1) ratio, set the way-back machine 30 years, and it could be a cover for a Springsteen or Lou Reed album.

A lovely old Mink Blue Marinoni racer
This one ticks all the boxes for me: Original paint, worn and polished Team Pro saddle, half tape bars (and we don't need no stinkin' brake hoods), cut-out spear point lugs, Record components, and old enough to have been made by Giuseppe himself - just a clean non fancy racer.

I spotted something interesting in the wild last night; it was dark and I had nothing to photograph with, sorry. In the grocery store bike rack was a very pretty red mtb.(?) labeled "Montera Bicycles" and "Designed by Gary Fisher". It had a proper fork crown, not a unicrown. Was this one of those LBS branded bikes? Google keeps auto-correct to "Montra", so they haven't heard of it. TIA.

Is it possible it was "Montare" rather than "Montera"? That was a staple name in the Fisher line for quite a while starting in 1983. A lugged fork crown pegs it as one of the very early ones, as they switched to unicrown pretty quickly. Here are some examples:

It's almost as cool as the Bontrager mtb. I spotted last summer. I'd never seen unicrown-style seat stays before.

His and hers bikes on the Ventura Bike Path near the river. The red Univega belongs to Jim Hall, son of THE Jim Hall of Chaparral race car fame. The big tired e-bike belongs to Hall's wife. The bikes weren't locked up, just stopped to do a little bird watching.
