Panasonic Tourist

A neighbour had this one tucked away, suspended from the rafters of his garage, and was intent on taking it to the dump before I asked for it and he gave it to me instead. How old is it and what is it likely to fetch where you are ?? Has the Shimano weird Front Freewheel system.

Shimano introduced FFS in 1977 and it survived into the mid-1980s. The frame's serial number will tell you its manufacturing date. The format should be ymxxxxx, where 'y' is a number indicating the year and' m' is a letter indicating the month (i.e. 1C23456 would be March 1981).

Same, for free I would think in clean condition you can easily get that.

Good beach city cruiser material--e.g., getting rid of the fenders to make room for some bigger tires that those rims will easily accommodate could be fun. Still got reflectors on the spokes. A spring seat. Frame looks a little small tho...

For a lot of people, bikes are like boats: nobody buys a boat with the intentions of just letting it sit unused at the dock -- but the fact is the marina is always full of boats and the lake looks empty. Around here it is not uncommon for older hi-ten steel bikes like this to sit in someone's shed or garage for decades unused.... and then be thrown away because the tires are flat..

Yep, affluence combined with who cares.

I keep thinking somebody got rid of the Scott I picked up a week ago because the front hub was a little loose, and they didn't care. At least they donated it instead of chucking it.

Nice little bike. I caught a lot of flak from my co-workers because that was my stock phrase when describing it. I assembled and sold a bunch of these and when my sister had a kid I gave her one of them with a baby seat on it. Alas, she did not ride it much but she did send a photo of it during its intended use. One thing people don't realize is that Panasonic had the best steel rims; don't laugh, they were absolutely straight, with undetectable seams, and strong.

I had a 1978 Panasonic 10 Speed in red - same frame and tires (Shimano) ... mint. Sold it for $4900.00 cash. I was asking $6500.00. Had all original OEM documentations, Manual, etc.

I'd say pesos but even that is triple the market value of a Panasonic Tourist.

Okay. I originally had it listed on eBay for $6500.00 Relisted with NO RESERVES for $100.
The end of bid, Germany, $4900.00 (he paid for S&H and Customs). That was 1998. So yeah,
there was bid wars going on, that which Collin had to remove some questionable bidders and
had to adjust the auction so validated buyers would be bidding. That's me laughing to the bank!

Yes, I sold one of those in really nice condition for $1,483,500. It paid for my retirement. Not bragging or anything... I was asking $1,750.000, but the buyer drove a hard bargain. Wish I had kept a receipt....
