You guys kill me, pun intended. I mean... mention knives or guns and you've got a thread that will burn white hot for three pages. Is this a bicycle forum or a tactical weapons and training forum? If we are going to go off topic, how about we talk about something interesting... yoga pants. That's what I want to talk about. I mean... its summer. I can see that it is totally alright to talk openly about purchasing firearms and tactical knives to cause potentially lethal harm to total strangers on the slightest of provocations but is it equally alright to discuss athletic clothing?
LOL.
Because knives are only weapons? Have you ever been camping or cooked dinner?
The self defense question was an aside from the OP and most people who mention it are against it, but still recommend a knife--because they are a practical tool. I use my pocketknife far, far more than I use my patch kit.

Firstly, we are not going off topic as the OP did ask about knives. The people here are talking about safety too which is right under the Advocacy and Safety, meaning the thread is in the right place. Being a cyclist doesn't make allow you to escape from muggers, robberies, people who would take away your bike. When you go solo bike camping, you will still need some sort of s protective item. A knife here is not meant for a weapon. The god people here are merely advising the OP against that.

Semi serrated is better for cutting a wide variety of things-rope fabric -like heavy canvas blue jean material.
Plenty of decent folding knives available.
Any knife is better than no knife in respect to self defense.
No one-well hardly anyone- practices knife fighting-why bother?
Practice shooting if you really think you are at risk of that sort of thing.
In any case a folding semi serrated knife-maybe 4" folded 3.25" blade-is handy.
I have one-decent knife
I frequently use it to cut the heavy plastic on 40 lb bags of sunflower seeds(birds are particular-beggars are choosers)
A normal sharp blade it is a lot more work-the serrations cut much better.
Oh-I keep the allen screw that tightens the blade fairly tight-
I can't easily flick it open one hand-like on TV-
I don't want it to open in my pocket-stab me.

Have served me well for 20 years. A money clip knife and collapsible baton. Money clip in my front right pocket, baton in my rear right pocket. Not sure why you would need more. My baton also has a lanyard which hangs out of my rear pocket for easy access.

Had one. Couldn't figure out how to pick my teeth with it, and peeling oranges didn't leave me much to eat. Kept a good knife on the other side.
(I gotta figure out what I did with the slow-mo videos of the oranges. .357JHP in a snub makes for a really cool muzzle flash and a lot of orange juice mist.)

I don't think I'm really ready for anything like this quite yet, but I've been reading up on things to pack in your seat bag, and one that intrigued me was a folding knife. I know there are lots of different kinds, but I'm wondering what's the most useful and what's overkill. Like, I don't know if I need a whole Swiss Army type knife, or one of those hunting or tactical ones with semi-serrated edges, or just a simple pocket knife. Especially if I ever start riding out on an off-road trail somewhere, or if God forbid I need it for self-defense.
Right now this is more of an just to satisfy my curiosity and to play "what if" for future adventures, but I'd be really interested to hear what you guys think about this.

You asked what knife is most useful and not an overkill, well, the most would be a knife with a multi tool. The knife is for cutting strings, ropes, dig out something from your flesh (God Forbid) the multi tool is to compliment your bike multi tool, where you might need an extra set of screw drivers or for whatever chores.

Yeah a multitool-one with pliers -I would go with the pointy ones-not a bad tool
Problem with a multitool
is none of the tools-except perhaps the little pliers-is a decent tool
Maybe better to just carry tools
and have a decent knife
My gerber seratted edge one- 4" folded 3.25 blade-is a good knife
Multitool knives-aren't good knives
And bikes0you need allen wrenches-usually in 2 sizes-to do much work
On a bike-carry decent specific to the bike - tools-
heck you need to carry a tube and tire tools-so you need a small bag-easy enough to just put a
1)decent knife-
2)decent stubby screw drivers 2
3)2 decent allen wrenches
4) decent needle nose pliers
I very rarely have carried a pistol-but if I did it would be holstered-under my shirt-separate belt- clipped to belt high above my waist-but I avoid riding any place I think a gun is needed-
now a days it would be a small 9mm like a LC9S- old days M-60 revolver
Knife-as a tool-makes sense-but have a decent one-not a multi tool(which I do carry in car bag etc)

Even a locking blade folding knife can sometimes be broken and then can close on one's fingers. Not a good choice for self defense.
I like a Swiss army knife with a few tools on it. Find an on line seller and examine the different models available to decide what you want.

I've been carrying one of these for close to twenty years now. Lightweight, locking blade (liner lock mechanism), pocket or belt clip, and I prefer the serrated edge model that can saw through small branches... Holds an edge relatively well.
Less than $15 at WalMart or Amazon.
