$4,000 to buy a bike, how would you spend it?

Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Go for the new Colnago Ace or Look 566 - both Ultegra bikes for ~3K. Fantastic reviews and stellar ride quality (my bud has a 566, it is a nice bike)
Why would you go for a TCR? Because its a fantastic bike, light, handles great and is reasonably comfortable. Also it's made by the best carbon fiber manufacturer in the world, with an impeccable record for quality, and its a bit cheaper than its direct competitors.

Who says it rides like a block of wood? I can tell you the TCR Team Advanced is a great ride, and the current iteration from the acounts of many owners and reviewers is even better.

And by the way, you do know who makes the non italian Colnago's?

The TCR Advanced is a very nice frame and would definitely be on my list if Giant made the color scheme more appealing.

Let me guess... Schwinn? Wait, no. Huffy! Uh... Rivendell. Apple. TGI Fridays. A duck.

Giant?

I'd probably get this frame. https://pedalforce.com/online/product...ducts_id=13613

Then put a mix of SRAM stuff... Red shifters, Red cassette, Rival RD, and Force FD. KMC SL chain. Some nice stiff BB30 cranks. Planet X brakeset. etc... It'd be really light and stiff.

Oh I forgot about the wheels. Probably some cheap 50mm carbon clinchers.

You don't need carbon clinchers and a power tap to do group rides. If you're going to race, I'd agree with a lot of what's been posted. If not, decide on fit and geometry, then frame material, finally groupset with what's left in the budget. No point getting a second-choice frame so you can have DA instead of Ultegra, for example. Of course, $3-4K doesn't get you the best frame/best components, so you'll have to compromise. But that compromise solely depends on your own long term goals for the bike. Lots of replies here to tell you what others did, but you can't derive much from them without knowing their priorities and intended use.

That's a middle of the line bike these days - certainly not high end. You will have a great bike but you will also have to compromise some to stay in your budget.

I recently bought a Pinarello FP3 with SRAM Red component for right around that price, and love it!

A CAAD 8 with Record 11 is like Lipstick on a Pig. A nice pig, but still.

1) why would you go caad8 when you could go caad9 ( yeah i went there)
2) good luck getting your SR11 on that budget. you want a full bike right?
3) you know lightweight standards cost more than his budget right?

did you even read the OP's post?

Buying a 2009 discounted Cervelo R3

https://www.competitivecyclist.com/ro...bike-6509.html

Dura-Ace 7900 and a great frame!

The 2010 is the same bike except for paint and the 7900 Dura-Ace is cutting edge.

That (except I'd get Rival instead of Ultegra) and 2 sets of wheels: a pair of PTs and a lighter pair (both from Psimet).

Not sure where you're getting your info, but after doing a lot of research, I didn't come across that opinion. I've had my TCR advanced for a few months and it rides like a dream.

Could we stop the my Chevy is better than your Ford comments.

The question is which high quality bike for $4,000 is the best deal.

I think a Cervelo with 7900 Durace is a good deal. What is the cost of the comparable TCR or any other brand?

I would buy a used Cervelo R3 ebay:$1000-1600
Sram Force Group on ebay:$1000
Dura ace c-24 carbon clinchers from chainreaction cycles: $640
Then probably the rest of the components from Probikekit.com and have the local shop build the bike up for you when you get all the parts.

+1 more. Would LOVE to upgrade to that bike. It's been in my sights for a while now, and doesn't seem to be going anywhere anytime soon.
