Got some birthday money that's burning a hole in my pocket...thinking about using it towards a repair stand. Initially I was thinking about the Performance Spin Dr. G3 Pro Repair Stand, but then saw the
Spin Doctor Essential Workstand/Ascent Shop Tool Kit Combo, seems like a good deal. Any major disadvantages to a stand like the Essential compared to the G3? Another option I was thinking about is the Spin Doctor Team Workstand.

What's your price range? I'm a huge fan of the Ultimate Consumer BRS-70. Great stability, light weight, portable, and durable. You can still find it from time to time for under $100 at REI and Performance.

I haven't had any experience with the Spin Doctor models you cited.

That might be the one I saw on REI's site...it sold for $139.00; currently its on backorder. I didn't really want to spend more than that, at least right now. When I saw these Spin Dr models and the prices, wondered how good they really are. That might be

To any and all, have a look at the Park PRS-20. It's the one that is used by Discovery and several other teams. My wife and I have 10 bikes between us and the old Park clamp style never really did the job for us. It was always such a hassle to have to extend the seatpost, resecure it, then try to single arm curl the bike while adjusting and clamping the bike with the other. The PRS-20 supports the bike under the BB and to a sliding front fork brake that is on a boom. It's just brilliant. It pivots 360 degrees and is adjustable up and down. There may be two of those here soon, I like it so much. And since I just broke my leg, I expect that I'll be using them a lot. Tailwinds to all.

Remember to search out something like "Bicycle Repair Stand" on e-Bay. I got one for about $80 that I like a lot, but since it's the only one I've ever used, I can't compare it to any other. Brand: Something like Vuelta. It folds up compactly, but seems pretty beefy when in use. The clamp adjusts 360 degrees.

I have the G3 and like it a lot. It folds down pretty good and the all of the quick releases are adjustable. It is also pretty sturdy as well.

If anyone is looking at the Ultimate Pro, do yourself a favor and check out their Pro-Elite.

Same tripod base (which is heavier guage aluminum than the Consumer, with QR extension levers), but the clamping head on the Pro-Elite is AWSOME! These things were all over the pits at Sea Otter this past spring and they are truly a remarkable design.

For the time being I'll stick with my trusty Ultimate Consumer, which has served me reliably for the past 6 years with no complaints on my part, but if the time ever comes to purchase a new stand... Pro-Elite, I've got my eye on you!

I have the earlier version of the Spin Doctor Essential. I was surprised it's made in Italy, and not from Asia. Worked fine for about a year, until the threads on the adjustment bolt and nut wore out. I added washers for now. I will be replacing the workstand for a better one, say the Ultimate. BTW, paid ~$50 for the Spin Doctor Essential because I had Team Performance coupons plus it was on sale at the time.

I'd love to have a work stand, but I have two tandems- one of which is a very old Schwinn that weighs close to 70 lbs. Anyone used one for a long bike that heavy? Not to mention the odd angles and off-center clamping involved.... any infor greatly appreciated.

Having owned a bike shop I only used the top of the line Park brand clamp bike stand . This was a $400 plus stand with a round heavy base to it. I could easily clamp in a Schwinn tandem and work on it with ease. A consumer stand for a tandem today might be a problem . Due to its length and center of gravity, a tandem would be hard to keep upright in a $100 to $200 consumer stand today. Having used tripod consumer bike stands, it is my personal opinion that they are awful. You need something with parallel to the ground horizontal legs for stability.

I use my Ultimate on my Burley tandem, but only if I can let the rear wheel sit on the ground, while in the stand. You can get a Park stand for less than 400, but delivery can be expensive. The LBS recently sold a used Park, double w/ extra wide jaws for about 200.

Stability - The workstand was stable enough for me to rotate the mounted bike in any position. Of course, I had to use the Park tool that keeps the fork/front wheel from turning. BTW I use the top most part of the seat tube for clamping.
Portability - The folded workstand is still quite long to qualify as portable, IMO.

- WoW! i just received this stand and it is very, very nice! a definite keeper... fast adjust, light, and good support...

- thank you so much for pointing out this item, as it has become an essential addition to the bench...

p.s. and even though the crack monkeys at UPS tried their best to destroy the item in shipment (box torn to shreds), the stand came through like a champ! (there are no loose parts to lose in shipment)

Got mine today too. UPS didn't quite destroy the box, but it had definitely seen battle action. Stand came through in fine shape. Looks like a really nice repair stand.

We've got the Ultimate for our tandem. No problem with both wheels off the ground either. There's actually a thread about stands for tandem owners, and the majority of them use the Ultimate. Simple but effective clamp, easy folding and storage, and a handy case too.

I was thinking of building my own stand this winter. Does anyone sell a nice clamping vise separate from the complete stand?
