I had to look up the term "potter"... "to move around in a non-rushed manner, in a relaxed and pleasant way". At 28.5 lbs, it would have been weight competitive (in my mind anyways) with other bicycle offerings in the entry level market. With the steel crank and steel wheels, I wonder how it achieved such a competitive weight? Just another general observation with all of these old ads... they really were concerned with gearing inches back then. I've come across a few St. Etienne bicycles in my searches, which probably means that some local bicycle shop carried them during the bike boom.

Thank you! This is the most history on the St. Etienne brand that I have seen anywhere. I am currently working on another St. Etienne, which seems to have come with a leather saddle, Reynolds 531 main triangle, chrome front fork ends, Simplex dropouts, Nervar Crank, and tubular wheels. Will post on that when I have it further along! I would be interested in any other reviews or marketing literature on St. Etienne.

I also had a St. Etienne which matches the description of KenNC with the exception of the chrome on the fork. Mine was from 1978. I sold the frame a couple of decades ago, but still have the majority of the OEM parts. Here's a pic from just before I sold it.

You're welcome. And thanks for reminding me about the ad copy. I forgot I was starting to see a correlation between a Road Test bike and an advertisement within a couple of months of each other.
I missed the full page ad in the same issue (inserted below and pdf attached).

Man, that bike is all buttoned-up! I dig the various shades of brown, tan, gold, and off-white with black on all the different materials.
Thanks for the color version.

I turned my St. Etienne into an upright bar porteur:
