I learned last year that there are two types of cyclists in the boonies. Those that carry TP and those that don't.

As I have posted before, I carry lots to tools and repair parts in my trunk pack, and always stop to help any one stranded. But strangely enough one the the tools I use the most on these occasions is my 6 inch crescent wrench, usually old beater bikes.

You know guys, the ignore feature is working just fine and is an outstanding way to improve thread content when properly applied. But of course, I get it, you guys are just bored and can’t resist the opportunities to chime in.

Tomato coupe please leave the thread. Thanks!

1) Why are you all attacking the OP for his observation and question? How about a polite reply or no reply at all, like your mother taught you?

For my part, I learned a few tricks from other riders in my local bike club:

- Many carbon Trek bikes have storage in the downtube enough for tools and maybe a tube as well.

- Many riders pack all this stuff in jersey pockets. It helps them keep the bike lighter and have a sweaty lower back. ;-)

- If you pack smart, all you need can fit in a very small saddle bag

For myself, if I’m going more than 5 miles from home, I do take a spare tube, patch kit, multi-tool and mini pump.

I remember when 15 year old me rode what felt like all over Adams County, PA, but which was, in retrospect, a fairly small area of the county. One day I went 32 miles. THIRTY TWO MILES!!!! It seemed like such a long, long way!

I never got a flat. Could be because the tires were like truck tires - heavy, inflexible, impenetrable. If I had, I'd have been screwed. I never even changed a tube on those tires. I wouldn't have known how, and even if i had, I didn't have the tools!

I'm glad for OP that he has only 2 types of cyclists that he doesn't understand. I don't understand dozens of kinds of cyclists.

I think one of these days I'm going to plot out a route with Garmin Connect and get an idea of how far I was riding back then. The towns I rode to and the roads I took are easy enough to remember, but the number of laps around town to chat with the girls at the burger joint will be hard to estimate.

How did you like them apples? (Inside joke for those not familiar with Adams County.)

HA!

You know the worst part? There are so many nicer roads than the ones I rode on BITD.

A quick plotting with Garmin Connect makes me think I seriously overestimated how much I rode as a teenager. I still think I was lucky to be a teenager then instead of now though.

I ride with a trunk pack, that should have enough tools, tubes, patch kits, mini pump, and other emergency parts that should get me home 99% of the time without walking.

You have to understand that there is a small group on this forum hates the type of bikes that an 85 year old cyclist rides. Their form of elder abuse. Some how I am considered a threat to their group think.

OTOH I hold the trump card here. One day they too will get old, if they are lucky, and im quite sure their attitude will change.

Most of these folks aren't othering you for you choice of locomotion. I haven't noticed anyone mention that.

They are showing their disgust at your constant othering.

It seems that the general consensus is that nobody actually GAF about the kind of bike you ride - even the other geezers. You may want to share your interests with persons who have similar interests on an appropriate forum.

I used to carry one of those - a great bike tool back in the day. It could change a wheel, tighten a brake bolt, tighten a pedal, adjust a cable, etc.
