Fun cycling quotes

I'll start:

"I came out for exercise, gentle exercise, and to notice the scenery and to botanise. And no sooner do I get on that accursed machine than off I go hammer and tongs; I never look to right or left, never notice a flower, never see a view - get hot, juicy, red - like a grilled chop. Get me on that machine and I have to go. I go scorching along the road, and cursing aloud at myself for doing it." ~H.G. Wells, The Wheels of Chance

Your turn!

LBS Mechanic

After a lengthy discussion all on my part with my bike mechanic him working on a bike while I talked away and getting an occasional look up from him, I asked so what do you think about my gearing plan?

He said “What's not in your legs needs to be in your gears.” And then went back to wrenching on the bike.

Quote was profound enough I added it to my signature.

Sort of a cycling quote:

A few years ago I hiked along the Oregon coast, and sometimes stayed in the hiker/biker sections of state park campgrounds. So one evening I checked into the hiker/biker camp, set up my tent, and on my way to get water saw these cyclists. So I bellowed out to them: "Hello bikers! I'm a hiker."

They probably thought I was daffy. Which is why I thought it was funny.

“It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -Ernest Hemingway.

That's one of my favourite quotes...but I am still not sure why he said 45 being a limit for riding FG...My guess is that 45 back in his day was considered old.

A bit OT, but a gallon of gas costs $4 and will propel my SUV for 20 miles. To ride 20 miles at a good clip takes me 700 calories, or about $4.50 in Clif bars. Just sayin...

That's pretty funny. I finished a ride this morning before going to work (let's just say that I have a commute that doesn't work well with bicycle commuting). 25 miles, and I still only ingested the same amount of breakfast I normally eat on days that I don't ride...

Can't cheat the first law of thermodynamics. (or any of the others for that matter). The more you ride the more you gotta eat to maintain weight. Eat the same and ride more to lose weight but once you get to the lower weight, you gotta start eating more again. ~500-700 cal/hr of enthusiastic riding.

It's certainly cheaper than driving, but the energy to ride aint free.

But never mind...we're getting way off topic.

Adults in America feel compelled to justify bicycle riding by implying that they are engaging in competition, or at least preparing to, or pretending to prepare to. It was this market that Bridgestone hired Petersen to address, and he did it in a way that confounded many and delighted a perceptive and lucky few in America’s bicycle community.
