This issue was probably the first bike magazine I bought. Started cycling seriously in the summer of 1993. Still have it somewhere….

I think I remember this issue. But you forgot to add a "trigger warning" regarding Mr. Matheny's libelous impugning of the good name of downtube shifters.

Around this time, I went into one of the largest bike shops in Chicago and they had exactly 1 road bike on the sales floor. The clerk “explained” that everyone wanted mountain bikes now and that road bikes didn’t sell. Ended up getting a nice Miyata from a police auction down on 26th Street.

nice to see the Jef Mallett illustration! He did a two page drawing for "how to train for a century" article in the 1994 August issue (attached below). He is now known as the creator of the Frazz comic. Not sure if he was drawing Frazz at the same time that he was doing these magazine illustrations.

I know modern mountain bikes are better and more capable in every way but mountain bikes from this era just look right.

I have trouble looking past those non-aero shift housings. Always have. I saw aero brake levers that buried the old high loops as a huge step forward and Shimano's brifters as a real step back. Learned later Shimano basically forced Campy to go buried housing with the patents protecting their non-aero approach. Cost Campy a year in development and several to get the shifting as good but thye stared from day one with the housings where they belonged.
To me, those Shimanos of those years were like the worst of the old biplanes. Yes, better than any plane before it but - you force your competitor to develop a monoplane? Scratches head.
