Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

You're old. you should have been in a ranch by now. No soup for you!

Good news and bad news.
summary:
Good:
* 78F
* Got in over 15 miles
* Pain is not too bad too soon to tell for sure but I think I'm getting better.
Bad:
* I'm slow AF
* Heart incident at about 8 minutes in
* No confidence in my capabilities and my lack of fitness only makes it harder to determine

Visual evidence:

The heart rate dropped like a rock when returning to normal rhythm but I honestly couldn't tell. I guess the beta blocker did its job since I maxed out at 157.

Close up of incident.

Yes, of course, but this is a young man’s malady. Anyway, the pain disappeared mysteriously in the course of boat work and schmoozing with friends and we are now enjoying the first G&T of the season.

In poking around, looking at different HRMs, I made the mistake of checking out Whoop. Yup, a buncha Whoop ads everywhere, now.

If you do it let us know how it works for you. I’m curious, but skeptical.

I don't remember ever clicking on any aircraft stuff, but lately I've been getting lots of ads for the Kodiak 100. So I do a little research, and the Wikipedia result says Quest Kodiak, cost $2.15 million.

Erm, yeah, I don't think I'm up for the payments on that unless they'll give me 50-year terms

Also very curious and highly skeptical. The interpretation of HRV is not ready for prime time, I suspect.

I did skim the DCR review. With the 3.0, Whoop will broadcast HR data, so that's opened the doors on examining the sensor data. DCR says it's just about the worst he's seen. For a service that relies solely on that sensor (you can't pair with any other, more accurate sensors), that's pretty damning. Also, subscription based and $18/month minimum. Pfffft - nope.

Are you using an arm strap? I was thinking about a Polar or something instead of the chest strap... It would be nice if I could have an accurate activity tracker that could double as an HRM, but that doesn't seem feasible right now.

I actually do an a.m. reading every day. It seems to respond to big acute stresses, i.e., a big workout the day before with an increase, and to more chronic stress reaching threshold with a decrease. I think it provides a level of insight and a physiological reality check that the TSS number etc. don’t give you and the literature on it isn’t too bad as these things go.

i am very suspicious of using optical sensors for HRV because they are incapable of transducing high frequencies and have accuracy problems. I assume Whoop, Apple, et al. are using some kind of sharpening algorithms on the data, but I have seen no info on accuracy.

I am using a Scosche arm strap for HR and a polar chest strap for HRV. The Fitbit watch and a few others like it seem to do all that activity and sleep stuff and, I believe, will send HR via BT.

On Moalpha’s rec, I picked up a Rythym 24. Works great and syncs well to the Garmin and Zwift.

In other news, took my wife out for her first road ride, and she freaked out riding with the big cars. Only lasted 5 miles. 😔. So, ordered her a Garmin and Varia to hopefully give her more confidence.

And, have been looking for a new lid, and lo and behold, ads for helmets are bombing her iPad.

You sure? That’s $3600 per month if interest free.

Well, if that's the case we would probably have to nix the idea of purchasing or renting a home when we head back to the PNW, and that thing's probably not big enough to live aboard...

Most everybody has a home. Very few have a plane. Time to live large!

In my extensive experience with frame sizing, it has always been better to go bigger than smaller(within reason of course. Going from a 58 to a 62 was a stretch, but 60 then became the new normal) I tend to use 60 and 80mm stems. The bars and/or seat are never too low. The seat can be moved forward if need be. My two cents.
I still ride that 62, and it's a very nice, comfy ride.

Three quotes in a row.
My knee still hurts, though not as much. I've been riding into town a couple times a week, and feel it every time. But I'm not feeling it every time I walk. Progress I suppose. I am decidedly missing riding a bike. I have a rooftop job this week, that will likely take the week. Maybe after that.
I do want to be in shape for the 2022 RAGBRAI with my b-i-l. So I'll not rush the knee.

I did a google search on "6' riding 56cm", and the first result was a BF thread full of guys my size riding bikes that size. Perhaps I'm being too analytical.

No one said I still had to shovel if I had a snow blower. My little 80 volt battery powered jobbie had to work pretty hard today, but I give it kudos. 2 feet+ plus drifts... I think I spent 8 hours out there today. I also slid a nice little 8x2' 125% in there. I burned some calories today.
