Does Anyone Still Race Steel Frames?

I want to get into this kind of stuff and I have a fairly high end frame from 1998. It is pretty light with Columbus Brain Tubing and since it is oversized, it is much stiffer. I want to be able to eventually race on it when I get a bit better in terms of fitness.. Is the difference between carbon and steel so much that I would be slowed down?

i ride a mid 90's aluminum frame, 8 speed (paid $100). I have yet to feel that it's the cause of being off the back (well, maybe on hills a 25lbs bike doesn't help, but I believe the difference in time is negligible). although, having rented a newer aluminum framed trek last week, I can attest that newer is def more comfortable and less harsh. but if you have steel, this point is moot. I have invested in a powertap, which I felt like would help me much more than a bike at this point. And I think it has so far.

I have raced my 86 Gazelle. It did not hold me back in the least.

I assume you have the parts to build that up. If you don't they may be the most expensive thing to consider. Frame material aside, changes in the BB and headset make some of the more modern frames (even steel) worth looking at.

i've raced on the road and CX against guys on steel frames. Fitness and strategy are more important than gear. Justvgetbout there and race what you have.

I almost bought a Cielo steel crit frame a few months ago. The geometry just didn't fit me quite well enough.

Looks like a nice raceworthy frame.

I was going to put race wheels on my old 1982 steel race bike, but never got back into racing.

If steel is good enough to make the podium at Uci cross races it's good enough for a cat 5 on bikeforums.
