Pinned pedals are flat pedals with a lot of pins on the edges. Helps keep the shoe from moving around on the pedal.

Look atbyje post post from Paul, of the DMR Vault pedals.

You can also get flat pinned pedals that have an SPD system, so you get choices of what you want for different conditions.

Yeah flats are the normal pedals where you step on them with regular shoes and ride.
Pins are little metal screws that stick up out of the pedal to maximize the traction between your foot and your shoe.

These are flat pedals with pins (the silver screws sticking up out of the pedal):


Pro Downhill riders (and many casual people like myself) want to maximize their grip on the pedal, without doing clipless, Five Ten which have a special rubber compound that's extra grippy on the pedal. Mine:
