Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Weekend Cycling/Exercise - 13/14/15

Tell us about your cycling adventures this weekend!!

Did anything interesting happen to you on your Friday the 13th ride?
Did you see anything interesting this weekend?
What's the weather like where you are? Have you got any spring or autumn photos?

Friday the 13th - no cycling. I couldn't motivate myself to go out in howling winds and cold pouring rain ... and I couldn't motivate myself to ride the trainer. So, there was just the usual walking, plus a little bit extra between offices.

Winter set in this week ... and it's not even officially winter yet!

Saturday - still wintery out there, but we'll see what happens later today.

Friday - Today marks the 1 week anniversary of my first road bike. This morning my neighbor (Thisisrandy) and I hit the road at 6am and did a 25 mile ride. I put 60 miles on the bike this first week, enjoying it very much.

I killed my legs at the gym Thursday night, did a one hour ride around 8am this morning and a short one this afternoon to recover. No bad luck, I think I'll call it a done day for biking. Weather is iffy for the weekend, I suspect my riding will be stationary; spin, spin, spin, listening to old Rolling Stones MP3s. Maybe I'll wear a nasty Keef t-shirt.

Snuck in 17 miles tonight after work tonight between torrential downpours. Ive only put in 214 miles this season due to my right knee baker cyst I incurred. Knee is felling real good now and I rode at 16.2 miles an hour tonight which felt pretty good.

Now to lose abut 10 pounds and knock out that first century ride !

Rode only 20 miles today thanks to the rain. Saw a large african american man pulling a suitcase up a sidewalk and as I got closer I realized there was a baby in the suitcase. If you cant afford a stroller what are you suppossed to do ?

Well my Friday morning day off ride was cancelled by a rain storm. So I took advantage of the fact that I visiting in southern Mississippi and drove an hour south to New Orleans to visit Wallingford Bikes. Bill was great to deal with and hooked me up with a new Brooks Swift Saddle. The B17 Imperial on my backup bike was causing a lot of pain in my left leg for some reason.

Mounted up the new saddle Friday night and then headed out this morning with it. Had to make one adjustment at around mile 15 and then continued on until I made it past 52 miles. Never figured I could ride a brand new Brooks saddle for such a distance right out of the box. I won't say it was Nirvana but it really wasn't bad.

I'll head back out tomorrow morning and see how many miles I can get it.

Went on my longest ride of the year(so far) Friday and did 37.22 miles on what we call the airfield loop in 2 hrs & 4 minutes with two friends. Funnest/best ride of the year. We kept hitting flying cicadas and it was hilarious. They are everywhere down here!about 20 miles in We took a detour and went down (& up) a hill that looked like a six flags ride in the distance. You can see it from miles away on the otherside of the airfield and I've always avoided it and taken the long way around but we were feeling good and hit hard. We set out with a goal of doing 32 miles in under 2 hrs so I was pretty happy with our final time!

Volunteered at a local marathon / half marathon. They have a couple cyclists pacing the course looking for troubled runners, etc. They had that under control, so I was told to lead out the hand cyclists through the field. That was a ton of fun, and some good work. I lead in the 2nd, 3rd, and 4th (of four) hand cyclists. The winner and 2nd place riders were really moving, and I definitely had to push it a bit on the 2nd place guy. I lead him the last 7 miles at an average of 25mph (Thanks, tailwind). Tons of fun.

Then I had to make my way back home in a brutal headwind. I was grinding along at about 10 miles an hour for 15 miles. I paid the price for the fun ride over to the start // the course // going back and forth looking for hand cyclists and the marathon leaders.

Total mileage ended up being just shy of 80. Here's the obligatory pic (On the new bike. )

Sprained my ankle on Tuesday so I am off the bike for at least a few more days. (still forget to unclip once in a while, DOH!) At least it is raining here so I can console myself by saying I would not be riding anyway.

20 mile ride friday after work in some hellish winds, went for a 15 mile "recovery" ride yesterday afternoon. i'm only in my 2nd month of cycling and i'm amazed at how quickly i'm slimming down. i started out about 25 lbs overweight and i've lost 15 of those already. i'm tempted to go for a ride today but i'll probably just go for a swim instead.

I slept all day friday(I work graveyard), Saturday though I rode about 25 miles. Good ride. Ruined my avg. speed 13.8mph now vs. 14.5, but hills/head wind. I've got 107.82 miles logged this month so far so I'm happy with that. Most of it commuting. Back to work Sunday.

Sunday - 30 km on the tandem, up what used to be our usual evening route during the summer. We haven't ridden it much since winter set in.

Friday the 13th - 5:45 - Went to put a little air in my rear tire before heading out and the stem came off, changed the tube, 4 miles in my blinking light fell off and into the woods. Returned home after 7.7 miles and avoid any more bad luck.

Saturday did 23.4 miles with no problems.

Managed another 50 miles on Sunday morning. The last 20 miles were tough on the new Brooks saddle though, ouch!! I would not recommend doing back to back 50 milers on a new Brooks saddle to anyone.

Well, two thoughts come to mind. One is that a ride like that separates the men from the boys. And the second thought is, I want my mommy!
