Rivendell Hillborne, thinking about selling my baby
because I just don't ride it much so it just sits looking good. It's in excellent condition, not a scratch on it, but since I'm getting close to retirement my wife said it's time to reduce my toy collection. I'm not looking to sell it here but I'd just like to get some idea of what I should ask for it. Any assistance you can provide will be helpful. I sold the panniers but everything else is current.

That is a sweet bike! What size is it? Can you get post some pics of the components, or list them in a post?

I though it was a 56 but they don't make a 56 in the Hillborne so this is a 55cm. I'm not sure which 55 though because apparently they have four 55cm setups. It's feels taller than my 56cm Specialized Tarmac.

It probably is a 56. This looks like one of the earlier generation frames, after they switched from cantilever to caliper brakes. The frame sizes for the Hillborne were changed a few years ago. They used to come in sizes 48, 52, 56, 60, 64. Then they tweaked the geometry a little and started offering sizes 48, 51, 55, 58, 62.

I feel like people build these up in highly personal ways and then want to sell them for almost what they spent... It's just not realistic. If you want to get the best price you should take it apart and sell it piecemeal.

I paid $1,600 for a used Sam Hillborne in 2014 that I think was a 2012. It's a 56cm with the double top-tube. No racks and the wheels were take-offs from a cross-check, so I'd think yours would be at least $1,600. There was one guy ahead of me who was too small for the bike and two guys in line after me, so I assume it was a fair price.

Nice Rambo sold today on eBay for $1225, which I think is an interesting daya point. I sold my Road Standard, first year issue with a fresh Joe Bell paint job and perfect tricolor/mavic components for about $1550 a year ago, so there's another. My guess is your Hilly, popular size, nicely set up, would slot in there somewhere. Bars might be a limiting factor, but those can be changed.

I never once said what I'd be asking for it, I only asked what I should ask for it. Pulling it apart for a few extra dollars is not my thing.

I have two other bikes, and many many other toys that I will be keeping like my 1959 Gibson ES335 and Fender Strat, but we travel the world and will be doing more when I retire so the bike won't get mush use and it's just too nice to have it sit collecting dust.
