Trek 330 Shifters...
Picked up a Trek 330 at the Dump a few weeks back and just got around to looking it over a couple of days ago. I believe that the 330 was the entry level model but what interests me are the handlebar mounted indexed shifters. Has anyone used these shifters, and if so, what are their short comings, if any?
The bike I have is identical to this one, only blue but in very nice shape.

WOW I have not seen those since.... I built a few bikes I think Giants with them back in.. well '88(?). they seemed OK for a entry level shifter. do the brake levers have the opening in the side for 'turkey' levers?

The brake levers are standard Shimano SLX or something like that. It was the shifters that caught my attention. That said, the frame set is in great shape and might be worth putting a bit of spit and polish into.

I love those shifters. I started my girlfriend on those on her Trek 330. I thought that they shifted just fine. The only problem with those is that they're plastic (I think?) and that I sometimes got a rash on my thumb from shifting to larger cogs.

They are kinda funky but they work fine. I have also seen these on some Giant Perigee model road bikes (similar to the 330).

The only 330 I've seen had downtube shifters. If you have the bosses brazed onto the frame, why not go downtube.
BTW, those look EXACTLY like the 14 speed shifters found on Wally WOrld road bikes and some low end BD bikes.

That Trek is a 1990 model 330. Entry level road bike, but higher than other brands' entry level offerings. 330s from just a couple of years earlier had better components, and had downtube shifters. By 1990 they were equipping them with more entry level comps. Earlier models also had full DB chromoly frames, stays and forks. Later years saw hi-ten stays and forks. Components were mixed; I think this model has Shimano Lite Action mechs (not bad) but appears to have a cheap crankset and seatpost. This was the era when Trek started branching out into hybrids and such, and had moved some of their road models slightly downmarket.
