Bed Liner

Has anybody painted their bike with bed liner? I did it awhile back and I was wondering if anybody else had tried it.

Neat idea for durability and scratch resistance, but you'll have doubled the weight of the frame.

First I've heard of using bed liner on a bike. If weight is not an issue it would make a very durable finish.

I used to know of a guy that did the whole exterior of a Ford Bronco in blaze orange bed liner. There was no question who it was when you saw him on the road.

The brand name is Herculiner. It was about the cheapest stuff I could find aside from the kind in a spray can. The finish turned out shiny which surprised me because I thought bed liner always flat. Oh well. It's pretty strong stuff but if I had to do it over again I would have used some coarser sand paper. The weight is in the low 20's, but then again it is a fixed gear

I don't know, I kind of like it. Looks like it's been dipped in roofing tar, kinda appeals to a Mad Max sentimentality.

I did mine just last weekend!
I love the look, and it has held up great so far banging into other hard metal things. Mine was a spraycan type, $5.95. Not as gritty or as thick as the above photo, so wheels and fenders and whatnot aren't obstructed when reinstalled.

Flat black and a fixie too, makes it look clean while also less appealing for thieves!

Ugly as all get out, but I've thought about doing the same thing for an around-town beater. Either Spray-X or RhinoLiner, since they seem to go on with a little bit smoother finish than Herculiner. There was someone on the SS/FG forum a while back who did his bike up with bed-liner, so it's not totally unheard of.

Scratch resistant if you do a lot of lockups to signposts, etc. No top-tube protector (which is just something else for people to steal.) And making your bike look like something salvaged from a nuke blast fire-damage sale is a pretty good theft deterrent.

That's a fantastic idea. I wish I'd thought of that. I didn't realize bed liner came in colors! Wonder if they make it in ANSI lime?

If you're weight conscious, what are you doing in the commuter forum ? My commuter weighed 50 lbs BEFORE I put the milk crate on it .

I carry a 7 pound lead acid battery everywhere I go, I'm far from weight conscious

Just a heads up to those who are. I have heard from several people that weight is an issue for them because they have to carry their bike up stairs

That is hideous. Looks like you dipped it in a septic tank.

The professional jobs can be done with a variety of colors, not sure about the spray can style.
This would look good on a trailer made for hauling.

That is truly hideous in a very cool sort of way.

The only part I can't figure out - for any frame that you're willing to do that to, why would you care if it got scratched in the first place?

I still don't understand why one would do it?

What's the point of protecting the frame from scratches if you can no longer see the frame at all? Would you use bedliner on the frame of a brand new car to keep it from getting scratched?
