Thinking I may go to the co-op today and start to strip down and clean this bike I picked up.


Couple questions:

Bike is missing a Nuovo Record FD. Would this 3 hole version be the correct original part (see the pic below of the RD)?

RD cleaning: is a soak in purple power/simple green plus brushing enough or does it need dismantling? It’s pretty grimy on the surface



Frame rust spots - I want to remove/neutralize surface rust spots on the frame and in BB shell while minimizing abrasion/removal of paint. I’ve read many methods, used a few (been a while though) but don’t want to experiment here. What’s the optimal method that does not involve steel wool? I was thinking to try either spot application of naval jelly or baking soda + vinegar + Lemon juice paste soak and toothbrush to work it. Clear nail polish to finish... sound right? Seeking tips from the veterans

Nice looking bike. My approach when I get a bike in this shape, and I will add that I would love to get a vintage Trek like this, is to get it to working condition, ride it a bunch to see what I like and what I don't like, do a cursory cleaning so that I know what I'm dealing with. While cleaning I can determine if there are cracks, bumps rust (like bad rust) or dents in the frame. Ride some more. Then I'll figure out what I want to do.

Once I have my direction, I will dismantle the bike, clean and re-lube everything. So far, I have not had to resort to using anything to remove the rust other than rubbing compound. Then I'll fill in the paint chips, put everything back together and enjoy it. There have been a number of frames that were so bad that I painted the whole thing, but your bike looks like just needs touch up paint.

Keep the pictures coming as the project progresses. It is always interesting to see how bikes become personalized.

It's a great bike! I have a 78/79 (brazed in late 78 for the 79 model year) 730 that was originally a 736.

As you probably know, the frame is a 730- the last number of the frame is the "group" on it. Yours looks to be a 738 with the NR group on it.

It's a light and responsive bike- but it's not fatiguing at all. I hope you enjoy it!!!

Thx for the responses, and yes def a worthy project which I probably won’t complete until late spring. In the meantime, I just ordered a “4-hole” NR fd which may or may not have originally been on the bike as my research says late 78 was the last manufacturing, so it’s plausible that this and not the 79 3-hole would have been used.

My plan right now is that I will give an OA bath just to the bottom bracket and then spot soak the few rust spots on frame.

I’ll repack all the bearings and put some new rubbers on, new chain, and then I will be rolling.

Will update in spring when I get that far

@mb158127 - OA is the right approach. I have done a complete frame by using 2x8 and plastic sheet as a tub. Fork fits in a wall paper tray.
I have not taken my 760 out for a long ride, just the neighborhood. It is a fine frameset!

Nice project! Have you checked the date stamps on the RD and crank? Some would find a front der that matched, and the link you provided is to a post-1978 "not going to impale you" front.derailleur. For my non-concours restorations, e.g. 99% of them, I find what works good, looks good, sorta matches, and is priced right.

Neat bike. Would that have been a special order with the braze-on shift cable guides on the down tube? And looks like GS hubs and DiaCompe brakes. 700 Treks are very cool in all forms.
