Notices
Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Oh god, that's a pet peeve of mine - when people talk away from you or when they talk to you at a time when your hearing is clearly compromised. My wife is always trying to talk to me when I have headphones in or I'm standing over the sink with the water running or the like.

My wife has perfected the "talking away from me" routine. That sounds like Miss Othmar to me now that I am middle aged.

Just be careful with the cannon. Remember what happened to the Mythbusters....

40 years of heavy construction makes most people hard of hearing. I’ve worn hearing aids for at least 6 years or so and needed them long before that. Even with hearing aids, I watch tv with closed captioning on.

I remember that! I have no plans to pull the string (or whatever they do), I just want to see it. While he is probably okay since the place is about 150 miles from any development, anything that happens from an errant cannon ball is on the young man.

This may come as a surprise to some, but I am not a &$% nut. In fact, the occasion cited above may have been the only time I fired a "real" %^*.

In hindsight it would have been nice had the person whose &^* I fired given me a heads up on how loud it was (I believe it was a .357 pistol), but she did not.

I haven't had a proper hearing test, but in general I think mine is OK. The problem is I have spells of ringing in the ears, which can be annoying.

So I went to area velocipede shoppe and checked on my bike. Unfortunately, the mechanic was not in. But I did see the bike and the white encrusted bars. They've got a lot of encrustment on them, but I think much of it can be cleaned off.

The bars he put on are indeed ones with flat tops. I've never ridden with anything other than round. Are they indeed more comfortable? Put differently (I can't remember if anyone said this), has anyone tried them and not liked them? I could have him take them off, since we didn't discuss this before he did it.

I like the flat bars, and have considered putting them on my bike, but the ones I want would cost too much when all is done.

My wife has them on her bike, and finds them much more comfortable.

These are non-crabon. $50ish.

I'd give it a go. Can always change back.

The set I looked at is crabon with internal routing. Would need new cables and hoses, labor to do all of that, etc. Passing, at least for now.

1) How much time do you spend on the tops?
2) Do you rest your hands on the bar when on the tops? Or loop your thumbs underneath?
C) With the bar and the brakes set where you can ride comfortably on the hoods or in the drops and reach the brake and shift levers, is the flat top still level?

You haven't lived till you've fired a .30-06 rifle. It's so loud, not only does it stun YOU, it stuns everything around into silence for a good 5 seconds.

I tried them and didn't like them at all. Obviously, you don't listen to me. (this is a line from Mrs John, since we were talking about hearing loss).
