Addiction 2021.1

Notices
Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Theoretically sounds good. But bear in mind rider didn't want to bother with even re-wrapping bars for several years.

The bars he put on are indeed ones with flat tops. I've never ridden with anything other than round. Are they indeed more comfortable? Put differently (I can't remember if anyone said this), has anyone tried them and not liked them? I could have him take them off, since we didn't discuss this before he did it.
I have both types. The flat tops are kind of nice on long climbs.

They only have one mechanic?

Yeah, that's a tough one. Setting up a new bar, after 7 years of not even changing bar tape (Ew.) could be tricky.

I can tell you I like mine, but I tend to ride with my thumbs on top when on the tops, or at most with them straight along the bar. I think I started this when I got Ergopower levers and a 'double groove' handlebar, where you run one cable around the back of the bar and one cable along the front. The cable in the back hit my thumbs wrong, so I stopped hooking my thumbs under, and I've been riding that way since 1996.

My favorite bike shop has only one mechanic. The shop owner wrenches, as well, but only one full time mechanic.

I suppose our shop only has one mechanic, at least in the off-season, because he's the only full-time/year-round employee. He is also the shop manager. The owner is also a mechanic.

This shop could really use another wrench, but I don't know where they'd put him. I worried about how a high-end bike store would fare during the Pandemic, till I saw the place. MAN! He's doing land office business, and all on quality bikes. No Walmart Specials there!

Bicycle sales and service are counter-cyclical.

We spent all summer fixing up bikes people hadn't ridden in years. Since they couldn't travel for vacation, they figured they'd go for a bike ride instead.

I could see that at the low end, but didn't expect it at the high end, after watching Canyon bikes disappear from the site, from the bottom up. And the shop owner said he had no problem getting parts for the upper end groupsets, but had supply problems with more mundane stuff.

I had no idea how bad I was until I got my first pair. I realize now that I was doing a lot of lip reading.

I still go without them often if I don’t need to interact with people and wearing masks and hearing aids at the same time can be difficult. I didn’t wear them at the doctor's office this morning because I knew I would have a mask on for a long time. I did have to ask the doc to repeat himself quite a bit but I got by.
