Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Mrs. GeneJockey grew up, from age 10-17, in the upper lefthand corner of PA/the toe of NY, then went to college also in the upper lefthand corner of PA (where we met), but moved out here when she was 24, 39 years ago. Today, she sent me a link on Realtor.com to a house near the town where she lived, and which she spent her adolescence DYING to flee. She has forgotten what real cold, for months at a time is like.

Today I felt good enough to climb the hill at home and a guy caught up to me a couple miles up and he asked about the trails and roads in the area. While talking to him I noticed he had no front brake and a single speed coaster brake on the rear of his hardtail Niner. I asked if he had heard of the race called "The Coaster Brake Challenge" and he said yes, and the race is tomorrow!

I didn't know it was still being held, I haven't heard of it in years but a friend has done it a few times. 4 races in the dirt and you have to run a coaster brake and no front brake. You have to plan your turns carefully, you can't just dive in and grab the front brake. You also have only 1 gear so you have to try and save momentum. Very different.

Oh,and the route is kept secret until the start so you can't pre-run it. The meet up location is announced so the guy I saw was trying to figure out where the route would be.

I put a new cassette on and have fingers crossed that solves the chain skip issue. Will find out on tomorrow’s ride.

I don’t use one either. I have a draw-string bag with everything that goes in middle jersey pocket.

I'm glad that works for you. I couldn't stand all that on my back. Plus the wear and tear on the jersey. I have jerseys that are 25 years old. A good seat bag that attaches to the seat rails is $25.

No, I ride like a man on the wings of angels. 😉

Actually, the bike has storage inside the down tube. Comes with a roll for repair gear - tube, levers, CO2. A multitool fits into the removable access cover.

In the summer, I do similar - minipump and spare tube in the center jersey pocket. I'm able to take any of my tires off the rim without levers, so I don't bother with those.

Now, in the winter, I'm packing 2 tubes in a small underseat bag. First, to free up space for a packable rain cape, and second, because I started getting flats and don't want to be stuck with no spare for the SECOND flat.

Did he have one of those fancy heat sinks around the hub?

Coaster brake MTB sounds pretty fun, I'd probably hurt myself though.

Mounted the new tire and have the disk brake mounted. My tool isn’t long enough to reach the center lock to tighten it. So tomorrow I’ll stop by my LBS and have them tighten everything. So far they seem pretty solid. They are true, and were not difficult to mount.

The front hub seems loose? The center piece where the axle slides through has play in it, but I don’t see a way of tightening it. Wasn’t sure if once I put it on the bike if it would be okay.
