They are manifestly rewarding enough to reinforce the kudos-seeking behavior.
I took all of my commutes private, this morning. No cold shoulder intended to my local friends, but the the kudos's from rank strangers gave me the creeps and I don't want random people knowing where I work.

The grooming analog makes sense. I was speculating that it affirms tribal identity. I'm honestly unsure about it - I see dozens of kudos on someone's nondescript effort, and I suspect that the reward from giving them is at least partly the reciprocity. The leaderboards, comments, flyby's, groups and challenges, all that makes sense.

I kudos nearly everything, my typical exception is small commutes.
Interesting all the hate for zwifting, do you real feel it's cheating or something? For an amount of time put in it's often harder than outside because there is almost no coasting, if you're using an accurate power meter and a smart trainer that supports gradient changes it can be quite challenging (especially at 100% trainer difficulty).
Now, on the other hand, if you're trying to pump up your millage for Strava with Zwift by using a dumb trainer (e.g. no gradient changes and inaccurate power) and hitting up the flats on a TT bike (I want to see you hold that aerodynamic pose so perfectly that whole time, IRL you're probably sitting tall...) every week that wouldn't deserve a kudos in my book, but really you're only cheating yourself.

yeh it's bad enough that Google figures it out and could predict where you are with depressing accuracy. And the legal technicality that by publishing certain information -such as our movements - we waive protections against the commercial use of that information even if acquired by other means. But that's a different story.

Until this thread I never realized kudos count was a measure of anything of interest to anyone. I always thought Strava was about the leaderboard and nothing else.
I also 'never' (well I have once or twice in five years) get kudos from strangers - didn't realize it was a thing. Only from those who are following me or were noted by Strava as 'rode with'
As noted earlier I just kudos everything in my current feed at the time I open it, that includes occasionally those accidental '0.0' miles rides people sometimes post and don't delete.

I'm not a fan of the chronic Zwifter/trainer person that only does that and hardly ever rides outside. I won't give kudos to that.
I often fit in a workout at lunch on the bike in the gym. If I went outdoors I'd waste 20min out of my 45min of time available just leaving out site to get to where I can ride and returning.
Not everyone is so entitled to have unlimited time and opportunities to ride outside. I respect and give kudos to folks who try to balance both.
But, I'll more readily give someone kudos who bothers to mount the bike once a week to Zwift or train indoors because their family or work life kept them away from having the time to suit up and get outdoors.
That'll get my kudos before somebody doing their 10,000th identical 5mi greenway ride on their e-bike.
My priority of kudos is:
1. New rider doing something special/trying hard
2. Any real race
3. Any real fondo/charity ride/challenge ride
4. Group rides of any pace over an hour long
5. Hard workouts outside
6. Hard workouts inside including Zwift
6b. Runs of any distance over a mile
7. Easy solo rides outside
8. Easy rides inside
9. Critical mass pub rides
10. Walking
11. Sleeping
Things I tend to un-follow for:
-racing MUP/greenway segments
-only riding the same exact route outdoors 100% the time and it isn't a commute
-zero physical effort ever, could be a manual bike or e-bike rider.......got sweat at some point
-abusing the social media post feature of Strava
-only rides indoors 100% of time
-tries to "win" the group ride, or generally unsafe riders

Anyway, on Zwift... as others have said, it's just as hard as an outdoor ride and it's recently a necessity given that I have to watch our infant while my wife sleeps and I ride the trainer before work. Rather get some work inside in than no work at all, and it has the added benefit of actually usually being a better workout since there aren't any interruptions.

Yes, it was completely coincidental. I thought it might be you, so "ride on" given. Better than a kudo as its immediate, but less so that it's not so public
