New to racing, training time questions on a fixed gear.

I am looking to get into racing and have yet to buy a road bike. However, I figure it would be prudent to find out if I have the legs first/build up the legs as I can train on my fixed gear until I get a road bike. Its a 22lb+ 4130 steel track frame with a 46/14 ratio. yes, i have a brake...i may be a hipster, but not a moron.

According to My hand held GPS I mounted with a Zip tie (haven't needed a cyclo computer until now) I rode 38.2 miles today. It took me 2hrs and 8 mins. I had an average spead of 19.4 mph for the first 20 and about 17.5 on the back 20 (plus some of it was city stop-go/slow down at lights). I didn't kill myself but I felt great and believe I could have gone longer/faster if I needed to. And I am in wisconsin, so most of it is pretty flat, although I've always liked climbing.

For you experienced racers out there, how does this stack up to other new riders? What numbers should I be shooting for for my first races? I don't necessarily plan on racing until next season so that gives me a year (I'm in wisconsin) to train. On the other hand, I could enter a TT since the USA cycling rulebook says you can used a fixed wheel with a front brake...but that one gear might suck on anything with a hill.

Any info would be helpful. Thanks in advance!

If you want to ride road, just save up and get a road bike. A year ago I was in a similar position as you, started doing longer and faster rides on my track bike and eventually decided to get a road bike. Riding track is also a great suggestion if there's one near you. Loads of fun and you'll learn lots.

the numbers don't mean anything, I was a FG rider before I started racing, and they don't have anything in common with road racing in ways that numbers will tell you.

1. Read the sticky at the top of the road-racing page,
2. Train, hard
3. Get into a race
4. Realize that you are almost certainly not strong enough
5. Repeat steps 2 & 3 until you are strong

seriously, you have to race to realize what the helpful/mandatory skills and abilities are for racing.
luckily, racing is easy to start doing.
You need a bike, a helmet, and the entry fee... that's all. (you soon want more, but you don't absolutely need all the other stuff)
