Maybe that person didn't take common sense when they were in school. I know it was never offered in the schools I went to. bk

I think it's more likely that picture was staged.

I would love to see a thief get set up for something like that.Somehow prevent the wheels from turning, and have the lock and chain give off 100 volts.

Hah! I saw a really sweet Jamis locked with some kind of massive u-lock. All the u-lock was holding was the ends of some sleezy little cable. Might have well been using a five dollar master lock and saved the weight.

Today I saw a bike "locked" to a rack with a cable lock.
Had I seen the owner I would have suggested that actually using the lock may be more effective than just tying the cable with a square knot.

I was talking to a guy in my LBS last summer, who was there to buy a new bike. Turns out he'd had two bike stolen from the local train station, where I was living at the time. It came out that he did indeed lock them with a decent lock... to themselves, not to a rack or even a fence or a sign.

Doing my best to be nice about it, I explained to him how to properly lock up a bike and wished him luck before leaving the shop and laughing my ar$* off.

Fake, most likely staged by the picture taker himself and sent to the blog to be posted.

^ Probably but not improbable.

I've seen bikes locked around the seat post (not around the seat tube). I have also seen someone remove and install a wheel by turning the quick-release lever like a spanner. Mechanical abstract reasoning is not that obvious for some people, and I say that with no disrespect.

haha this reminds me of something a little off topic

i got a brochure from my local city government. it was about the benefits of biking and walking to work. bike advocacy etc...

there was this section for helpful advice, and i quote:

"locking a bike to itself is not a sufficient means of theft prevention"

... I think it comes from motorbike logic where you would place a lock around a chassis member and around the wheel... so if the wheel can't rotate, the (heavy) motorbike can't be driven away.

I've seen padlocks inserted over disc brake holes for the same reason. Wouldn't work on a bicycle though!

Ok, I actually saw a friend of mine, who's generally a smart enough guy, lock his bike up to a 6 foot tall sign post with a cable lock. He was going to leave his bike there while we drove somewhere for several hours.

Naturally, I said "just a minute", walked over and lifted his bike up, over the top, and brought it back to him. He was like "Aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaah. Crap."

If I had been a little quicker thinking I would have said "Just a sec, I need a 2nd bike and I'm going to steal this guys" before I did it. :-)

The best I've seen: A mountain bike locked to a wheelbender rack via a Master lock around a spoke in the front wheel.

I wanted to release the QR and set the bike behind the rack.

I've actually seen a girl lock her bike to one of those tall-narrow traffic cones at my school. I'm not kidding, believe me or not, and I asked her why. She responds,"Because no one is allowed to touch traffic cones, it's the law."

To play a bit of devil's advocate, there could be a looped tab behind the post the cable is run through and out of our range of vision. Some bollards have this feature in my area as a cheap bike rack. Some are just 4x4 wooden posts with holes drilled in them used as bike racks as well.

Still, looks like a big stinking pile of failure.

Gotta love the internet. Post a nude photograph of a famous actress, a porno of Britney Spears, a picture of a female breast filled with maggots, or a picture of a guy standing on the observation deck of the World Trade Center on September 11th with one of the planes looming behind him and the first thing people do is yell "Real!"

While it's true that it could be:
1. A fake
2. An actual rack with a loop on the other side....

It is still funny....grow a sense of humor people!!! Sheesh!!!!

btw....that traffic cone one........I lol'd pretty good at that.

Couple doosies I've seen around DC:

1) Hybrid with U lock around fork leg. QR skewer. Numerous times.

2) Nice Lemond road bike freelocked w/U lock around front wheel and frame. Leaning against a rought iron fence. Saw it 3 or 4 times.

3) Milano with U lock around seatpost,QR binder.

4) Two older rigid MTB's locked to a meter with U lock around seatposts. Both QR. Used to see them all the time like this.

5) MTB with U lock through the brake cable running across the toptube. You wouldn't even need to cut the cable, just pull it out from the lever and then restring it.

Left a note on bike #1. Now they run the lock around their frame.
