Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

I just saw this too .. pretty interesting. However, I find it amusing that they are developing their own power meter too. Why not just tap into Cycleops, SRM, etc.. Seems like a waste of efforts.

Probably because nobody wanted to play nice? Also it appears that they wanted to get power per pedal which neither SRM/QUARQ or Cycleops offer.

True .. pretty interesting concept though. I still don't think we will ever see it to market.

That doesn't wash. It's all transmitted over ANT+, which this device supports.

Someone has demoed an adapted set of Speedplay pedals with power meters; presumably these measure power per foot.

The big question to me is Why make a dedicated cyclometer that does all this, when you could get a smartphone that does all that, and is a smartphone.

Who would want a smartphone on their handlebars? It's larger than you need for cycling. It's not water proof.
Right now no shipping smartphone supports ANT+. That will change soon but the other problems are going to take longer to fix.

They did. You just have to ride for HTC/Columbia or work on My Track at Google to get one:

A fair number of people ride with Garmin x05s, which are about the same size as a smartphone.

True. but there is this

That leaves waterproofing as an issue.

I guess everything is bigger in Texas... I'm pretty sure my Motorola Droid is bigger than my Garmin Edge and it's not waterproof.

I run my Nexus One with a custom Desire Android Rom on it. I ended up rigging a mount on my bike to the stem (yeah, it is kind of big compared to your regular bike computer) anyway...I run sportstracker app which has HxM HR monitor support, which I use in conjunction. Does speed, elevation, GPS/Mapping, auto uploads the results when you finish to login later to review the ride/stats and of course HR.

I did wish I had cadence like this unit and power output.

I think Pioneer has a good idea with a purpose built unit that has the accessories/features to do it all without piece meal stuff you have to go through now. ANT+ is the standard and they support it so if you have a powertap, it still works etc...

Probably won't see this for another year or more..if ever though.

This or something like it will be created. The day of the $1000 power setup is coming to an end. I like how they made their own solution for power.
