11 Speed Crankset compatibility
I've got a 2009 Lynskey R330 with a SRAM Rival 53/39 crankset and 10 speed Rival drivetrain. I'd like to get a "mid-compact" 52/36 crankset but all I can find are cranks designed for an 11 speed drivetrain.
Will a crankset designed for an 11 speed drivetran work with my 10 speed drivetrain?

not significantly different
You might use the same cranks,
'11 speed' chain only has to slip over the teeth of the chainring..
does it?

You might just change out the rings & save some coin. 10/11 speed is virtually interchangeable for what you are intending.

The answer is: "Yes, an 11 speed crankset will work, but rings of what ever tooth count he wants are all he really needs and will be cheaper." I think the only real hang up would be if he needed a different BCD to accomodate his new gear choice. In that case a whole 10/11 speed crankset with rings of choice as a package deal would be a good way to go.
Asking what the BCD of his current crankset would determine the best way to proceed. OP: What is the Bolt Circle Diameter of your current SRAM crankset?

He was looking for a complete crankset so he could have rings with a different tooth count. Not necessarily because of a real functional difference between 10 or 11 speed, but because all he could find was only 11 speed and wanted to know about crankset compatability with his current drivetrain.

Exactly!
Sorry - I didn't express my question very well.
My current crankset with 53/39 rings has a 130 BCD. I want a mid-compact crankset with 52/36 to make climbing some local short but very steep climbs more manageable when combined with longer rides. The mid-compact cranks all have 110 BCD so simply changing rings won't work. Plus, the only mid-compact cranks I can find are meant for 11 speed drivetrains.
Thanks for the replies so far.

I'm used to 5 bolt chainrings which were all compatible with each other in a given BCD. Are the 4 bolt patterns as interchangeable?

What you see , depends on where you look.
You Only look at trend pushing online sellers of higher end parts , that's true
distributors to bike shops still have plenty of parts for older bikes.

A Hint:
rather than seek a blanket opinion,
Look up their measurements. before you buy, to know.
there are economic incentives to force you to get parts from original manufacturer's ,
As your car repairs will demonstrate.. for a while...
then others see a market for selling those spares for themselves.

This is the main reason I regret buying the 105 cranks that I did.
