Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

No. Just another bit of kit to a pro.

Only pro I know of who keeps old bikes is Erik Zabel.

Armstrong has been quoted that he keeps a glass case somewhere in his house with various yellow jerseys... To paraphrase, something about how he's glad they're encased in glass because otherwise they'd smell. Is it considered unlucky to wash your champs elysee jersey?

Lots of riders keep their leaders jerseys. Robert Millar had dozens of them.

A glass case? More like a closet, I'd imagine. Hasn't Lance won something like 70 TDF yellow jerseys?

I wold find it pretty hard to give up a bike that had been custom designed and taylored to my every whim and need. He probably kept at least 1 of them.

maybe back to Trek for performance analysis? like how did the bike and various components hold up over (x) amount of stages over certain terrain.... etc?

Man, how much would a certified Tour-ridden bike from Armstrong fetch in an auction? Interesting.... I'll start the bidding at the $50 I can afford... maybe that would get me a Tour-ridden 9 speed DA chain...

Maybe you could go in with someone on one link of said chain - I don't think $50 will get you the whole thing.

I think it's amusing that they couldn't be bothered to change the dates after 2003. Maybe the Lance fan working there resigned in 1993.

A few years ago, Trek would sell the previous year's USPS team bikes on their website. I can't recall seeing any of Lance's bikes on there, but they seemed to have all the other rider's bikes for sale at fair prices.

I suspect Trek retained ownership of all bikes that the USPS and Discovery teams rode, but likely allowed Lance to keep whatever bikes he wanted to keep.

I have a friend who has one of his Caloi Merckx frames when he rode for Motorola..

The pic is deceiving, because when Lance won the world's in 1993, there was no US Postal team.. He rode for Motorola and raced a Motorola Merckx for that win..

My LBS, has a motorola Mercx bike. The thing is pretty much untouched. It has the ripped bartape, pedals the whole nine yards. I think its on a puller system so if you ask nicely *writes on list* you can touch it

Lance does keep A LOT of the bikes he rides/ridden on. If you read the book "Lance Armstrongs War" it says he keep quite a few of them. He has an entire ROOM for them, hanging from the ceiling/wall everywhere.

this article says the final stage bike from 2005 is a 58cm. I think his SSLX climbing bike was a 56cm with a slightly longer stem.

I wonder where "Old Number Seven" is now.
