Thanks for the response man!
So, turns out there are three bikes. A Specialized Mountain, Trek LS(With bolt on aerobars, my friend says otherwise it's a fine road bike and not actually tri-specific), and a Specialized city bike, 10 speed.
I've taken the 10 speed down to our gym and started running it around the 1.25 Mile course we have laid out in the neighborhood. I forgot how much fun riding a bike is.
The bike I grew up with was fixed gear so shifting was new today. That makes life quite a bit easier.
Right now I'm just going to start peddling around the gym when I have downtime and get some mileage under me before I develop any real training plan. I've sent out some emails to local listed coaches. There's one who specializes in track. Hopefully I'll hear back.
When I get the Trek sorted out I'm going to take it over to the mellowdrome and get some baseline metrics in. It's only 2 Miles +/- from out gym so I'll be able to get over there quite a bit.
Appreciate the warm welcome!

Hi and welcome to the sport and to the forum!
First off, riding any bike is good, but a tri bike in aerobars can be dangerous to ride in the city in traffic. Don't be the guy heads-down in aerobars trying to negotiate traffic. That's dumb. Also, as a new racer, you won't use aerobars much if at all your first season.
You will need to get some basic bike fitness and handling skills. There are a few options:
- Buy a used road bike to start riding on the road till you start on the track.
- Buy a track bike and ride on the velodrome several days a week. That's what I did my first season because I didn't own a road bike. I only owned a track bike and I rode on the velodrome 3-5 days/week after work. You'll eventually need a track bike, so why not get it now?
- See if the guy will give you the bike. If so you can maybe put a riser stem on it and inexpensive shifters and convert it to a road bike.
Many lift 2-3x/week during the off-season combined with bike workouts (using a home trainer or on the road) and then when the season starts, trade one of the gym days for a race day at the track.
You don't have to ride super long distances. Just ride

I went to kessina velodrome last year and had a great time. I decided I wanted to do some racing during the '04 season and started ramping up my training. I got an older computrainer and did the basic tests and began an program to prepare for the season. It's been a few years since I last raced and my expectations are modest. Fun.
I think I am on schedule.

I am guessing you meant '14 not '04, if not you need to speed things up...lol. Hope to see at Kissena.

I had a stomach bug that drained me for several days. Even low-intensity rollers and spin bike felt awful. I spent that time working on my bike fit (thanks to the suggestions from you guys) and reading training methodology info. Even though I was low on energy and electrolytes, the days off allowed my muscles to recover more than usual. When I went to the gym again last night, I felt remarkably fresh. I didn't push it and just kept the weights moderate.
By the way, I knew that I was over the bug when I had an unyeilding craving for bacon and eggs at 2AM one morning. Before that, I ate like a bird for 4 days.

Yes, I will be racing this season (2014) and expecting tons of fun! I may head up to Bromont also if the budget holds out.

I always thought that when pros drop out of a tour due to illness it was just some excuse for something else. Until I tried to race while sick once, and realized how useless you can be on a bike when even kind of sick. Nothing is worse than trying to put an effort out in that state.
Im finishing week 5 of 7 in Arizona. Fatigue is starting to really accumulate, especially as I start pushing the intensity up. FTP is definitely up, average power on rides is a lot higher than usual. Going to focus on vo2 the next 2 weeks, full rest week and then my two 'A' road races are mid April.

Functional Threshold Power = the steady state power you could do for an hour. Or roughly what is your aerobic capacity. Quickly degenerates into power/weight and confusing the Schleck brothers as ideal body forms.

Over the past year, I've changed:
- Crank length
- Saddle setback
- Saddle height
- Foot angle
Which dramatically affected my muscle recruitment and even more dramatically, my high RPM timing.
I'm still making adjustment just this week.

Cleat position too? How so? More aft? I'm pretty in the dark as far as the cleat wisdom goes.

I used the Big Boy cog today at the track for some Flying Laps...I damn-near passed out, literally. I got that woozy feeling you get when you do a PB squat.
12t is not for the faint of heart
...and apparently, it's time to clean my equipment.

Oof, dat 12t.
Today I participated in my second ever sprint tournament. Did better than I thought I would. It looks like watching match sprint videos helped me out tactically! Having a rad coach helped a bunch too.

Not only are you naturally quick, young Skywalker, you also seem to have a knack for the tactical side. The Force is strong in this one.

Quite the opposite of 12t, I did some kilo intervals and I never got out of 88"... too much fatigue from Saturday's road ride. Was a good weekend combo, though.
