700c vs. 29 Question -- No not the standard, are they the same size question.

I have a tandem road bike with 700c disc brake rear wheel. I would like to put a more robust rear wheel on for a touring trip I plan to do with my son. Question is, can I buy a 29 mtb disc brake wheel and put it on my road bike? I'm wondering if the hub widths are the same, the disc brake will line up with the brake correctly and the 9-speed cassette will fit on the hub. Any help would be much appreciated.

ETRTO of 622 is the rim-tire bead seat diameter and it is the same.

Tandems often have even wider rear axles than single bikes 145 + rather than 135..

the rim is moved to the left better centered over the hub flanges so a bit stronger..

People have toured on Rohloff hubs ,, another rim-hub dishless built , tandems too .. 135 frame rear then.

measure your frame rear dropout spread 10x1 shimano axles are made longer,

but added left end spacers needed require the disc to be moved over too..

Shimanos tandem rear hubs also are drilled for more spokes 40 or 48

Well, what is your current hub width? Start there. Current mt hub spacing is all over the place. 135mm qr, 142x 12mm through axle and 148 mm x 12 through axle are common. Plus your 29er rim is going to be wider. What width tire are you planning on using?

Depending on the age, odds are that your rear triangle is spaced for 130mm wheels, something you can confirm by measurement. However, 29r wheels are designed for mtb and as such are probably spaced 135mm or more, something to confirm with the seller.

There's also whether it's built foe 9s or 10s cassettes. They're the same for Campy, but I don't know whether Shimano 9s and 10 cassette bodies are the same.

If you clear the width and freehub bodies the rest is in thye details, ie. standard 10mm QT axle or an oversize thru-axle system, etc.

On the bright side, the left side disc offset is the same for mtn and road, so that won't be an issue, but be the mounting system may be different, calling for a new disc.

BTW - if the only issue is axle width, spreading tour frame to 135 is easy enough, and the added width will help strengthen the wheel.

most single road disc frames have been spaced at 135mm. Some older disc frames were 130, but it's not that common.

As far as a tandem goes, you really need to find out the width, there is a lot of variation

Tandem OLD is probably going to be 145, unless it is older, which it may be if it is a Burley? OP needs to nail down the size needed. I would suggest looking for a tandem-specific wheel. Velocity, for instance, sells robust tandem wheelsets.Velocity Wheels - Hand Made in USA

Just curious, are you putting attempting to put a bigger tire on too?

It's 145

I think I'm going to stick with the wheel I have. We're doing the Great Divide through Montana and Wyoming. I'm going with a 700x40 tire. I have the 36 hole Deep V rim which Velocity says can be used for touring so I guess it will be strong enough.

Deep V supposed to be a pretty strong rim.
36 spokes w/ 145 mm spacing should result in a rather strong wheel.
The wider spacing reduces dish, resulting in a much more symmetrical wheel.

one thing not mentioned is the weight of the captain & stoker.

Great Dive? Maybe a drag brake?

What kind of tire pressure will you be running? The Deep V is a very narrow rim for a 40c tire.

The tire is rated 50-75 psi. I'll probably run towards the higher end of that.
