This bike is within walking distance from me. Is the frame any good? I have been impressed by the aztec lugs in the past, but know very little about them. What would be a really good deal on this bike?

Based on what criteria? The presented bicycle is a seventies something Peugeot UO 8, and, though it is, basically, an entry level French made bicycle, it will offer pretty darn nice ride quality. Were I in the market and assuming the bike is in decent condition, I would not hesitate to pay $100 for it. At $25.00 it is a steal, in my opinion. This is one of the UO8's that came my way, over the years...



However, be forewarned, there are issues with some French Bicycles. You should make yourself aware of them before jumping in.

In closing, make sure that the front derailleur is in good shape. They often crack in half...

I would hesitate to pay $100 for it but certainly it is worth more than $25. It's a great bike with steel wheels, a steel cottered crank, ass ploding plastic derailleurs, and lots of weirdly french threaded goodness.

They make fabulous riders once you put on some aluminum wheels. That's why you don't want to over pay for one of these.

I am always looking for a bike with the following characteristics:

Reliable
Pretty
Comfortable (capable of doing a metric century without days of recovery)
Unique (not on the one of a kind category, but I do enjoy things that money can't buy)
Fast (not as in winning races fast, but the ghosts or high performance from the past should torment her)
Under $800 after new componentry.

I currently ride a Miyata 914 (same frame as Team Miyata) that I 11x2 Dura Ace'd, and I have a full vintage 105 groupset and a full 2016 groupset waiting for the right frame.

I also have a Myata 1000 frame on the queue for this winter's all weather project.

I am mentioning what I have just to guide the opinion on what to do. I prefer to go up on the class and sophistication level, and get things better than what I already have.

Sorry guys and gals, I know this was a lowball. With a BIN of $250 I felt it reasonable to respond in kind. While I agree these are great bikes for many reasons, any one that is in need of a full orverhaul like this one appears to be is not worth top dollar whatever that is, certainly not more than it sold for originally.

The more I look at the yellow bike, the more I like what I see. Nice cosmetics. Good chrome. New tires. Decent half hoods. AGDA leather saddle in what looks to be in need of some treatment to make it useful. In need of an overhaul? Of course it is. What thirty or forty year old bike isn't?

Anyway, just my two cents worth and, unless the OP is competent in refurbishment, I would pass, considering some of the unusual problems associated with some French bicycles.

Based on the bikes you listed that are already in your stable, I'm not confident you'd like the ride characteristics of a hi-ten steel frame with steel wheels. Your Miyata's are far superior in tubing quality and components. I'd save your money for that 1000 you mentioned.

I think this is the "feigned ignorance" type of sale. List as yellow bike, misspell Peugeot, and hope someone falls into I can take advantage of a dumb seller category. If it works someone will get what they deserve.

I've seen better bikes, with better components, go for less than 250 on CL, in particular Raleighs, Miyatas, Nishikis, and Fujis.

That said, the yellow UO-8 looks like it has seen little use, and was stored in a dry, dark area, so that it is very nicely preserved.

I haven't personally experienced a delrin RD failure, but have had FDs break as in the picture above, and have had a delrin shift lever snap off in my hand while on a ride. I suspect UV damage degrades the delrin, but the plastic bits on that bike look like new.

Although they appear to be in nice original condition, steel rims are no prize, and were the first thing to get an upgrade back in the day.

I would think $100 tops if you want a clean original mid-70s UO-8.
If you want to upgrade to better components, $50.
If you want to upgrade, and really really want a UO-8 in the relatively uncommon yellow color, $75.

My brother had a yellow UO-8, and I had metallic blue one, back in the day, and we liked them a lot. But nowadays, with BF and CL and eBay, it's possible to get a great deal on a much better bike, IMO. Still, it looks really clean, so if you are interested in it, why not throw out a lowball offer in person, and repeat it, or lower it, every few days. Like, "Steel rims? Wow, those are dangerous in the rain. Is that a death stem? Cottered cranks - i'll have to take it to a bike shop to get those off so I can grease the bearings." etc..

I have sold two of these. One worked well but had a small frame dent, and I got $180 for it fairly quickly. I had another with the same derailleur problem that took 3 months to sell for $90. And it was much nicer than the one I sold for $180. Weird.

IMHO, that is a $125-$150 in metropolitan NYC area. In the spring, that bike would be gone in a weekend, if priced within that range.

Nice original UO-8. I had one just like it in the early 70's (except white). This one is in great shape considering it's age. The only thing half-way worn looking is the ADGA saddle. I would not hesitate to fork over $100, and because nostalgia is a factor, would probably go as high as $125.

When it comes to evaluating entry level and low-end bikes, its all about location or aesthetics.
No serious collector would be interested in a Peugeot of that age and caliber so it must be either a fashion thing (hipster alert) or for basic urban transportation. I live conveniently close to a BIG city (formerly famous for the antics of its mayor and now known as The Birthplace of Drake) where the local transit authority wants about $141.50 PER MONTH to ride the buses and streetcars, a price that is set to jump by AT LEAST another $10 or more per month after next month.

Even an old beater like that yellow Peugeot has got to be worth at least a month or two's worth of rides on the TTC.
Definitely worth more than $25. If the bike lasts through one whole school year its over a thousand dollars cheaper than bus tickets.

My wife keeps dragging home these ugly old Pugs (see recent acquisitions below) because our kids have contemporaries in The City that adore them but I can't see the charm.
