Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

He admitted to not being of sound mind on the descent. Nonetheless, I'd be interested in seeing the documentary.

I guess at some point I might want to plug in to global news. This forum is, generally, my global news source

This could always be the Big One, but unless it uncovers serious “structural” issues in the global economy, which it could, I don’t see why the effect on equities should outlast the real world crisis. Disclaimer: But what do I know?

I will say, some very knowledgable people, like Mike Osterholm and Ann Shuchat, seem more concerned than average.

Saturn scare this morning. On my way to work, I could tell the shifter felt funny. Once up to speed, it was obvious that the shifter was not acting properly. It won't go all the way to the right so I can't get it into 5th or Reverse. I drove to work in 4th and left it at the mechanic's.

I am hoping it's just a clip or other part in the linkage that is worn and easily fixed, but I fear for my poor little plastic car.

Sniff.

Hope it's linkage and not synchros or something. The bad stuff goes single gear by gear, in my small experience.

smithsonian might give you some money for it. I am sure it would make a great exhibit.....

I jest but I drove a 95 manual acura integra for almost 8 years. Drove it from Va beach to california and back, the car wouldn’t die. The only reason I don’t still have that vehicular device is because my daughter was born, and I wouldn’t put her in that death trap.

hope it’s a simple fix.

I am hoping it's just a clip or something in the linkage too. Will post update after I hear from my mechanic. The car is old enough that mrs datlas does NOT want me putting much $$$ into it.

Speaking of old cheap cars in exhibits, about 15 years back an art department gave a group of art students each a Yugo. They told them "This was a failure as a car. Make it into something else"

The results were quite interesting and whimsical. I recall one was made into a giant toaster. One was made into a giant backyard grill. Here is a pic I found of one that was made into a foosball table.

p.s. here is a link to an explanation of the exhibit with pics. I am getting older, it was 25 years ago not 15 years ago.

So? It was a dog when it rolled off the line, but its survival is a monument to the devotion and economic good sense of its owner. We will mourn its passing.

Good article in the Atlantic about the Coronavirus. Looking more likely this will not be contained and will spread. Good news is only 1% fatality rate. Bad news is 1% of a LOT of people is still a large number. I hope it does not happen, but would be prepared.

If it's a clip or something, you do indeed live a charmed life.

I have a fair supply of dried goods at home. Things like beans and lentils. I may grab several bags of pasta on my way home tonight since I will have the car. Maybe do a larger shopping run this weekend for canned goods and stuff like broths.

And bread, milk, butter, eggs and TP, of course.

Glad I'm in another country. The last scare I remember, still living there, was people buying up duct tape and visquene to protect themselves from
radioactive fallout or some such. I WILL pay more attention though, to the developing story. At places other than this thread, I guess.

And I will pick up some hand sanitizer. It's good to have that around anyway, where I live. So, not such a big change.
And, since @MoAlpha made reference to keeping his hands away from his face, my hands are finding reasons to go there. Thanks, Mo

Mechanic said problem is in shifter bushings and pivot, plus said cables are worn. Thinks he can fix it without too much trouble. I hope Saturn shifter cables are not too much trouble compared to Shimano!

Thanks for the well-wishes, all.

My wife and I spent Sunday and Monday in Milwaukee. Saw a concert on Sunday night, and then had a nice lunch Monday and visited the Mitchell Park Horticultural Conservatory. Really neat place consisting of three conoidal domes, each with different flora and fauna. Really wonderful place to visit.

Here's a few pictures for your enjoyment:
