Interesting because most of the people I know who mtb in what are now considered “road” shorts are among the most seasoned and long-time mountain bikers I know.
They just don’t give a crap about the fashion show that started long after they started riding dirt.

Important: I've noticed a trend to have really short zippers on some MTB shorts. I hate having to undo the button to take a wee, especially if I have a belt on. So check for that...

There are fashion police on the trails? I thought the mtb crowd was open minded and accepting. It's roadies who usually get called out for being elitist.

I've got some Fox shorts that have no zipper and the waist closes with a snap and a difficult to operate in a hurry hook on an elastic band. No quick wizzing allowed.

Was out mountain biking on the trail Tuesday night. Came around the corner on the trail where another guy had just wiped out. He had just his bike shorts on and no mountain bike shorts over them. Left butt cheek of his shorts was tore all the way through from the crash and you could see skin and he was bleeding.
This is why you wear mountain bike shorts over the padded shorts. It's not a fashion thing or an elitist thing it's called common sense because the likelihood of crashing while mountain biking is much higher than road riding.

Its fashion. That's fine, its nothing to be ashamed of. MTB is very, very heavy on the fashion. It takes a lot of work to look that casual. Why do you think we have technical fabric high-performance shirts made to look like flannel plaids?
I prefer baggies on the trail (I wear lycra when the baggies are dirty). But I am under no illusions that I do it for anything other than vanity and a sense of style.

I wear these shorts with a moisture wicking T-shirt purchased at Walmart. And the people I ride with dress similar. To ride MTB with just padded shorts only and nothing over them is just plain old dumb.

Here is what a TRUE mountain biker looks like....
Unfortunately, I can't pull it off as well, so I wear baggies and a t-shirt.

I usually wear baggies but screw it if it is super hot out I have no problem rocking just padded shorts. As I said before I wear roadie jerseys because they fit tighter which means they breath better and don't get hung up on crap as often. I have a couple small tears in my favorite jersey from wrecks but haven't hurt my tight tight shorts yet. I've taken more flack for my bright green baggie shorts than just wearing padded shorts lol. Nobody around here cares about your fashion choices and besides on my local trails you rarely run into anybody to care. I could ride nekkid most of the time.

Like I mentioned...It's not about fashion choices or worrying if you look the part...It's about protection to the skin in the event you take a spill on the trail. Padded shorts don't hold up well to dirt/rocks/brush if you take a tumble.

Shorts??? You guys wear shorts? We don't need no stinkin' shorts around here.
All joking aside, on the road I'm wearing tight fitting lycra. Baggy shorts on the MTB. Tasco just came out with a short that I REALLY like. In fact, they're the best MTB shorts I've ever tried.

i am not not knocking anyone, just a post:
I live in a place where there is a lot of single track and due to the virus, many non MTB bikers are out trying the trails. Last night there was a yuppie(i do not have an better way to describe him) . He had his pink sweater over his shoulders on his back and a some what looking beach cruiser(but it was not a beech cruiser). I was ok with the way he was dressed, what i am wondering since i passed him up quickly and just kept going was right after the bend where I saw him was a 1.5 foot drop and then a very large dip to a hill to a another drop. What was he thinking with a bike like that will just be toasted.
I also so a another biker in some very muddy spots and he was on a road bike with very thin tires, he was full of mud.

I hit the trails every now and again when I'm out road riding just for fun. I don't hit the crazy trails or do it when it is muddy and it is a cross bike but still running 28mm slicks while in road form. Do get some fun looks.
