When I worked at Fishers Cyclery in Salt Lake City in the mid 90’s we sold GT and Gary Fisher primarily. As a mechanic at the time, I saw several OCLV carbon frames come back with a delamination on the down tube because the front wheel had flipped a rock up, rendering the frame unrideable. Carbon fiber frames fail catastrophically, giving no warning that they’re about to explode under you. Those OCLV frames, while light and sexy, were terrifying to me. They were so light as to be insufficient to the task. When someone came in with a Y bike we’d say “Y bike? Y’d ya buy that bike?”
