1x MTB with 42T ot 44T crank
Hello,
I am considering buying a 1x MTB (preferably 27.5) for town riding and want to put 42T or 44T crankset to get enough speed. My dealer says it is impossible.
Is there any way I can get 1x with 42T or 44T with one of the following?
- SHIMANO CS-HG4100-10 11-46T
- Shimano SLX M7100, 10-51, 12 speed
- SRAM PG-1210 Eagle, 11-50, 12 speed
- Shimano Deore M4100, 11-46, 10 speed
Is there a principle solution for that?
There is another way to change it to 2x crankset but new problems with capacity arise... And I would prefer 1x in general.
Thank you!

your problem isn't the cassette or RD it is the frame. I don't think they are many mountain bike frames out there where a 42/44 single chainring will clear the chainstay.

Thank you!
But if it fits in the frame, do they exist in principle?
Neither Shimano, no SRAM seem to make them... Are there any other alternatives? Road bike single chainring is out of the question as far as I can see. Or is it not?

Shimano offers a 1x crankset for gravel bikes, and offers it with a 42t ring: https://bike.shimano.com/en-EU/produ...C-RX810-1.html
Whether it will clear an MTB chainstay is another question. I am inclined to doubt it.

using a 32x11 big gear on mine and it cruises at 20 mph withour much drama -- a 34x10 would seem to have a decent big end unless you are time trialling around town with regularity

Nah. It's too low. Once you put narrower city slicks on, a less-than-80" gear is going to be fine on the level but spin out at the slightest advantage.
Canker is right too. The current crop of MTB have the wheel nested tightly but also have bigger tires, and in order to do that the frame flares out right behind the crank, so the ring clearance is small.
You can get a higher top gear with a 10t or 9t cassette but that's going to co$t you
kilgor, why do you want a MTB and not some flavor of road bike? Are you looking for suspension? Specialized has several bikes (Diverge Evo and Sirrus X) using their "Future Shock" suspension in the steerer. And this kind of bike is definitely going to be better with racks and fenders. If you don't need suspension there are now a ton of 1x hybrids

DMC707, I partly agree. But my commuting environment can be very different, including well-paved cycling road along the river. 34x10 may still be OK with 29 tire, but I would prefer 27.5, because on other occasions the route is fairly technical on narrow streets. And in this case I feel 34x10 is too low for me.

There is another problem with availability. I would be happy with Trek Dual Sport but was told to wait till next April...

That's how it's going right now. Don't forget to look used. There's a whole category of hybrids with budget front suspension, so if you can compromise on the 1x you can probably find something.
