7/21 speed vs 8/16 speed
Hi,
I was planning on buying a new mountain bike, and was looking at the Carrera Vengeance Mens Mountain Bike since my budget is around £300. I was going to go for the 2019 version but it was recently replaced with the new 2020 version. The 2019 version had a 7x3 speed while the 2020 version has 8x2. My question is how much difference will this make when riding on trails? Should I go for the 2020 version or try to locate a 2019 version?
Thanks,
Olly

I’d want more details about the difference in drivetrains.
If the 7 speed Altus as well?
I assume the 8 speed is a freehub and cassette, is this true of the 7 speed or is it a freewheel? If the 7 is a freewheel, I’d lean towards the 8.
All else equal, though, I personally vastly prefer 2x over 3x for mountain biking. I’ve been converting my 3x cranks to 2x since 2000..
However make sure the 2x8 has a low enough gearing for you. Without info on the gearing, it is hard to compare the two bikes in this regard.
Oh, and forget about the total number of gear combos (21 vs 16). That tells you very little.
