OK, I was looking at a Schwinn CrossFit inside a Canadian Tire and noticed that between the brifters and the cross-top or interrupter levers, the cross-top levers seemed like I didn't need to pull a lot to get the brakes to work. With the brifters, I had the impression I had to pull farther, longer to get the brakes to the rim.
Like are short-pull brakes going to get there faster then you start pulling on the brake levers.

The "brifter" (I hate that word) levers aren't long-pull. They're long levers activating short-pull brakes. The interrupters are shorter levers with the same leverage, so there's less physical travel at your fingers. You lose mechanical advantage and the ability to modulate.
Take a look at the chart at the bottom of this article.
In the event you need to make an emergency stop, apply the the levers your hands are closer to instead of reaching for the faster brakes.

I just kinda wanted to get involved in this thread. And, I don't think I've ever posted in the mtn. forum.
My commuter/all-arounder is a steel cross bike with low-end Tektro cantilevers. I recently switched my cx race bike to TRP CX8.4s V's, replacing FSA SL-K cantis. I love them, the braking is vastly improved, no mud issues, and I can brake later and less.
Now when I jump on my commuter I can't stand the lack of stopping power with the cantis. With full panniers in the rain, it's downright dangerous.
Think I should be able to fit some Tektro RX5s with my full fenders and Shimano 105 9-speed levers. I should have enough clearance with the fenders and not bottom out the levers.
Haven't used disc brakes yet, but for me, V brakes are much better than cantilevers. Excited to try them out on the commuter, and excited to be a part of this thread

This thread on 30 years will be interesting.
Though .. it did help me underatsnd what i may need to do with my canties on the GT (throw them),yet i am not still convinced on the V-brake due to the fact that i had success in making a russian tourist bike's brakes stop like hell and with chinese pads to top it all .So its either the super designed soviet bike alluminium brakes that are fooling me ,or the horrible design on the shimano canties that is responsible for the bad reviews on them .We''ll see after i make those work .
Anyway ,waiting another 16 years .

I was debating on cantilever brakes or linear pull brakes for a bike I'm working on and Google'd for opinions. This came up. It has to be bumped so it never dies.
