It's amazing to me that a citizen would be so full of themselves that they would argue bicycling law with a BIKE COP!
Now, I've argued with a cop in his personal car (he tried to order me on the sidewalk when it was piled up with plowed snow), but I think a cop on a bike might just know a thing or two about what the law says regarding bikes in traffic.
The word is HUBRIS!

Ya gotta love a braindead cager who argues the bicycle law with a bicycle cop. Too bad he couldn't be ticketed for stupidity.

Then you haven't been to Portland, Maine. Our bike cops routinely ride on the sidewalk (illegal), do not signal their turns (illegal), and run stop signs and red lights (illegal).

Then as a cyclist, you'd be crazy to live in Portland, Maine. I'm not sure if cops are doing this for emergency/on-duty reasons, but if cops are doing this for non-emergency/off-duty reasons, then I won't live there.

I don't see why that behavior would make a cyclist not want to live here. Yes, it's unfortunate that the cops don't understand all the laws, but I think that's the case in many places. In the two years I've lived here -- biking almost every day year-round -- I've only been harassed by our PD once (for riding in the middle of a narrow lane). That officer was in a car, not on a bike, and I wrote a long letter to his supervisor detailing how ignorant of the law he was. Strangely, I haven't seen him patrolling since then.

I love this quote: "I guess that’s the personality of someone who would honk like that (frequently wrong but never in doubt)."

genec,
Thank You!
I am friends with a few bicycle mounted police officers in this town. They have gone through the same thing.
Three years ago I was on a narrow one-lane street and had a car behind me blowing the horn and threatening to run me over. Car stereo blasting at the same time. He would come up about 2 feet away from my rear tire. At the next intersection I kept middle of the lane. Hauled the shirt up over the big .45 S&W and he went silent real quick.
