Bikes: 1985 Fuji Del Rey, 25" frame, 12 speed

FINALLY... It cooled down (briefly) and the sun came out, so I got out my old C&V, 1985 Fuji 12 speed road bike and went for a quick spin, just to work out any kinks, and finally get back into riding. You all remember, these past few weeks, last month, etc... Here in Richmond, VA, it was always unbearably hot, 97°, 95°, heat index 107°. NOBODY went out on a bicycle, unless they got up at 5:30am! Then we had that tropical storm come up the coast and it rained and rained and rained... Ugh...

So, as you see by these photos, I took my classic '85 Fuji and decided to experiment with my 2012 Ford Escape, put the back seats down, measured the height, width, etc... and just barely squeezed my C&V '85 Fuji in the back with the front tire & handlebars turned 90°. Somehow, someway, it fit! As seen in the photo, I don't have a bike rack (yet), and didn't want to ride all the way down to the James River from home (dangerous side roads, idiot drivers, yellow safety vest/blinking bike lights, etc...), so I squeezed in my Fuji into the back of my Ford Escape and drove down to the river.

5.25 miles out 'n back in 21:27 or so for about 14.7 mph. Not too bad after not riding for a while.

Can you believe it? They FINALLY finished the small bridge on Riverside Drive (it was closed for a long time, as one of the massive storms we had and rushing floodwaters, washed part of its structure away!

A little MUP and back road action on the fixed gear last night, plus a little off-roading

I also had a bit of fun and went the whole ride without using my brakes, only using my legs to decelerate the bike. Super fun to ride this way, but a few weeks ago I learned the hard way that maybe vintage track hubs aren't intended to withstand skidding forces and I tore out the lockring threads So I'm always wary about how much back pressure I put into the pedals.

Nice ride with Mrs.GMG the other day.

Did the Grand Round in Mpls. for a total of 54 miles.

Stopped at Bde Maka Ska and was surprised at the low volume of people out and about.

The Pelizzoli and I got the MLK quote but were both confused as to the meaning of this new piece of street art. Nevertheless, it was a lovely day for a 32 mile hilly ride...

What kind of Gopro did you get? I've been thinking about one myself. Partly for recording fun parts of rides to share, and partly to have video evidence of crazies if I need to seek legal action.
Lights, cameras front and rear, helmet, GPS, action, 24/7, you cannot have enough evidence, proof, etc.

Lights and helmet will help your case regardless of laws when it goes wrong and you are trying to take on an army of corporate lawyers.

Some insurance companies have clauses that limit or deny liability, coverage when no lights or helmet, many will use it regardless as a defense.

I rode 30 miles today. I've been choosing flatter routes lately to accommodate my single speed Bates with 69 gear inches. So far so good, I have been able to clear every hill. Admittedly I have circumnavigated the really tough ones.

Too nice not to ride.
Except for long overdue work.
So a 20 miler close to home.
after a dry spell, two rainy days make the next ride (today) about the smells.

You have seen the fields, but I found an interesting fence.

Bob suggested the Red Barn Route in the Lower Valley for Saturday.
Flat, easy, and quiet enough you could move up n down the group to visit with each person without worrying about traffic.

Yeah, looks like a great ride and a nice day. Here in central California, our air quality is terrible, with all the fires the smoke is setting in the valley.

So Doc Cannondale has posted some rides on Skyline Drive with some impressive climbing numbers. I don’t get the same gain on my south end of Skyline, so, as I had an errand to run up in NoVa I decided to see for myself. Holy smokes it was stiff! Just did 20 miler out back riding south from Thornton Gap; the Spaghetti was past al dente even before I started. The outbound 10 miles was almost all climbing, lotsa fun descending on the way back.

Coma Coppi (about 3500 ft) and turnaround point of the ride.

Another day over 90. Rode 55 miles up to Lake Bluff. Hugged the lake to get a little cooling. 25 miles of headwind coming home. Jerry Ortega sightings = 0

Discovered a beautiful, shady road that I hadn't noticed before running along a ravine.

View into the ravine - shade was much welcome at this point.

Bridge over the ravine. Will come back for some fall hiking.

Made my way over to Sunrise Park, but it still is pay to play if you want lake, so I made do with some nice old houses in the neighborhood.

A lot going on with this one, but probably well over $1 million given the location.

thinktubes my wife is from LB. Her parents live on the other side of Green Bay Rd and her brother lives near that ravine. Cool little town. Didn’t realize you had to pay to go down to the beach, but then again, I’ve only been down there in cold weather. Any Mr T sightings?

Took a short ride on the Falcon this morning to pick up a new saddle. Got home and changed my opinion 2 times before reluctantly putting it on the DeRosa, when an idea popped! So the bike went from sedate = white saddle/hoods/wrap/bottle cages, to this.

Being Italian and dressed up, the photos warranted a ride to the vineyard.

22mm Sprinters really measure 23.

Sorry for the hard shadows/mottled background

Softer pic

I like wrapping this ribbon, thick enough to tension well when tightening. And those lovely brakes! Ahhh.

and the saddle from CL. Like new, from a nice fellow. Who drove 30 minutes to get it close to me.

Swallow - as narrow a saddle as I dare. Time will tell. Not soft (like Selle Anatomica) or broken in.

And below he Falcon from the morning ride. In need of a new wrap, and I have ribbon in grey which may work. BUT = These are wider so less overwrap per wrap, which I like. Maybe a black saddle.

edit: my last post for a while.
think i'll spend more time off the internet
maybe go hang out in the mountains for a few nights
but it won't take long to draw me back.
Maybe i'll lurk.

Various things have kept my wife off the bike all season, nothing serious at all, just the way it is. Today we turned out a short but scenic ride, only 10 miles round trip from our apartment door in uptown Manhattan, but mighty pleasant nonetheless.

Hell Gate Bridge.

I didn't catch her her name...

Or hers.

Yep, Lake Bluff is pretty neat. Nearly all North Shore beaches have fees during the season. Too bad, since most have challenging hills on their access roads. At least they can been ridden early/late season.

No Mr. T sightings, even though I rode near his former estate. I hear they restored the trees a while back.

No riding for me.
This is what it looks like at my house. About 3 miles through the smoke in the photo is a beautiful forested ridge. Just the other side of that ridge is the Woodward Fire in the Point Reyes National Seashore. Our air quality has been in the "very unhealthy" category for most of the last few days. Strenuous exercise in this air is a very bad idea. Fortunately for us the firefighters seem to have a pretty good handle on the situation, so we have not been issued an evacuation warning. As I write this the helicopters with their buckets of water and the air tankers create a steady drone overhead. A very surreal world.
