Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Nice, easy ride today. On the way home, I got to pick up our new team kit, which was delayed quite a bit because of the ol' covid. Lookin' sharp.

Did I just buy the wrong chain? I put this on, but now it sounds like my chain is rubbing agains something when I pedal and I have verified that it is not.
I sized it following park tool using the largest chain ring and largest cog but somehow screwed that up to so now it’s too short.

I read somewhere that chains these days are sometimes asymmetrical. Not as severely as the SRAM flat-top chains for their 12speed groups, but with cutouts on one side but not the other. The recommendation is to see if there's stamping on one side but not the other, and the stamping should be visible from the drive side. I have NO idea whether yours is like that, because I use KMC chains.

I put the writing drive side like the instructions said, it’s just making a lot of noise while on the big chain ring and in all gears. Small chain ring it’s just a little louder than the last chain.
I didn’t know if the noise was due to the chain being cut to small or if the chain was too narrow or something else. I can shift large chain ring large sprocket but the derailer is stretched out to far.

Question number two, can I add a link back to this chain?

First thing to check is that it's on the right side of the rear derailleur tab.

Then make sure it's facing the right way.

Thanks lester, that might solve the rubbing noise, I f up the tab. Any issues with me adding links to it?

Just back from a neighborhood walk with mrs datlas. We were walking side-by-side, and after several minutes she said the she had been matching my pace but it was too fast.

I think I half-wheeled her, but I don't know what you call half-wheeling on a walk. Maybe an expert walker knows?

I would suggest pics before you do something drastic. I have mis-fed the chain through the RD cage so that the chain goes outside the cage for a small section, and it makes a very loud noise. That's the prime suspect. A chain that is "too short" would be typically be fine in small chainring up front so I am not thinking that's it.

So this is the first issue, I am hoping that If I reroute it then everything will be fine. But this chain has a master link and I do not have the tool or pliers to open it.

I have not used the newer Shimano master links, but most of them you can compress by hand and open them. Or use a needle nose pliers if need be. Give it a try?

Sure fire method (there’s a pun in there). Well after dark, avec headlamp or flashlight, pour gasoline, white gas or kerosene down the nest entrance. 1 cup will do it nicely. Then, ignite the fuel. The burning uses up all the oxygen in the nest, suffocating any hymenopterans who survived the heat. Has never failed me and they will NOT fly at night.
Although, once, at a cross country camp I ran for high school runners in the mountains of WV, there was a big yellow jacket nest right next to one of two main trails that we used on daily runs. First day of camp, we were getting lit up. That night, all the coaches pile in a van and drive down a dirt road to use the headlights to illuminate the trail for immolation of the nest. Another coach, he a professional fire fighter, and I move in, pour white gas down the nest hole and ignite the fuel. We forgot to clear leaves and deadfall away from the nest area and we started a wee bit of a forest fire that we were able to douse after about 10 minutes of frantic kicking of dirt and clearing debris. I am sure we looked like the biggest idiots ever during the panic and we still laugh heartily about that night, 15 years after the incident.

You can grab the links around the master in one hand, then apply pliers slightly diagonally, one jaw on each fixed pin end of the outer plates. That'll press the pins together in the slotted ends of the plates.

Or you could remove the bottom RD pulley and squeeze the chain around the tab, then reassemble.

It’s called half-stepping. Some of us runners do it unconsciously and it can end in angry confrontation when it’s performed by a regular running mate.

You don't need the special pliers. Put it in the small/small for as much slack as possible, isolate master link like this and then pinch diagonally on the link with regular pliers, so that you're pushing the inside plate with one end of the jaws, the outside plate with the other.

... and this is why I inspect tires after every ride. It also likely would have kilt a GP5K. Fortunately, this was the semi-squared rear, so I put a new one on the front and rotated.
