Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

The heat just ruins everything if you like to be outside. Even just a quick trip to the store and I get all sweaty and super uncomfortable. That's one reason, probably the main reason that Mrs.T and I stayed in Central Illinois when we retired. We looked at a lot of areas of the country but they all seemed to have their downside like excessive heat or cold, hurricanes, or some other natural problem. We ended up staying here because are 90+ days are limited to a handful and sub-0 days are limited, also. Are precip numbers are also passable. Flooding and blizzards happen but are dealt with pretty quick.

I do admit, though, that eastern Kentucky and Velo Vol and datlas 's areas had a certain draw for us for the beauty and the riding.

BTW, Mrs. T had a fire (gas) going yesterday .

IKR?

Wife and I are actually heading out on a road trip tomorrow to the Greenville SC area.

Partly because it was our wedding anniversary this week, but mostly to see if we would want to move there next year. On paper it looks lovely, but we need to see it for ourselves before we fully commit.

The fact that it's close to peak fall colors and near Great Smoky Mountain NP gives me a pretty good feeling that we'll like it there

And FYI, we're acutely aware that this isn't the best time to be going out of state, but we both decided that as lovely as it would be to explore local shops and restaurants, we're going to do everything possible to minimize contact with people. No shopping. No sit-down restaurants. No bars. Masks on everywhere. etc.

The 4th, Sunday. Technically next week, I guess, but since we're cyclists, it's this week.

Drive down the interstate and write down ones from the backs of trucks.

Not the ones I know, but it's a biased sample.

On another subject, I knew people with your last name when I was growing up: Franz and Charlotte. They had a nice place on Lake Wentworth in VT. They had two kids, a boy and a girl. He went by Fränzli and I forget her name.

Huh. Never heard of any in Vermont, but I don't have a current family registry.

I bet datlas could find some Arners if he poked around his area a bit. They spread out from SE PA.

That's kind of vague. Depending on the circumstances, definitely go to the nearby mountains.

The plan ATM is driving straight through to Greenville tomorrow, then splitting the return trip over Saturday/Sunday or Sunday/Monday. Knoxville has been floated as a possible overnight stop, but we're not totally sure yet.

I am hoping that we'll be able to visit nearby Mt. Mitchell.

Oh. Have you ever been in the area before? You're kind of a nature person, aren't you? If time allows, I'd think about driving north from Greenville on 276 (or similar route) and catch a stretch of the Blue Ridge Parkway. I haven't checked but there may be colored leaves on the tops of the mountains now. Weather looks pretty good, for the season of death.
