This Shimano RD setup look reasonable?

I now am running a triple front crank (48-38-28) with an 11-32 8 speed cassette, and just installed a Shimano Deore RD-M591 SGS long cage, which according to their specs should accept this combination. So here's pictures of the two extremes (small-small, big-big) and a third with the geartrain in the lowest gear (small front-big rear). B-pivot adjustment is just about in all the way.

Look about what I should expect? Chain length aceptable for this? Bike is a '87 Nishiki Prestige btw.

Yep, I'd say that is just about perfect.

Thanks, it seemed to ride OK, but it's hard to get a decent ride in when it's still 100 degrees outside at 6 pm...

Looks good, to my untrained eye. I recently bought a used XTR rear mech, online, and found out that the little plate that positions it, against the dropout, where a screw adjusts it's position, was badly damaged. I figured out that it's very similar to the one on an old Acera X, so I replaced it with said Acera Xs plate, which took awhile, since I had no idea what I was doing. The tricky part was getting that big spring re-tensioned right. I took it for about a 10 mile test ride yesterday, and it works great, so yay me.

I would say it's a little short, in the small/small. Usually when setting one up with a new chain, I would have the RD almost folded against itself in the small/small. When setting the chain length, I will set the length at the first possible link that the derailleur could hold tension, yet not allow the lower section of the chain to contact the upper jockey wheel. If that's a full length chain, you may need a couple more links. If it works, it works though.,,,,BD

Yes, the chain might be a little short but if you can shift into the big-big combination without bringing the system to a shocking halt, you'll be OK. Just try to remember not to ride in that combination. If you do lengthen the chain, it might dangle when you're in the small-small combination, and that's not such a terrible thing.

Not to hijack the thread, but I've been beginning my daily ride at 7 PM of late. Praise be to dynamo lighting.

Looks good to me, too. If you ever decided to switch to an 11-34 cassette, I'd use a chain 1" longer just to be on the safe side.

As the sages above have suggested, add 1 link plus move the axle back a little bit in the dropout. That should give some insurance against getting gear bound...

Running Big/Big combo is not recommended but there are times when you need to grab a lower gear quick...
