Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Yeah, $170 for a pair of tires definitely gave me pause before I tried them.

Since everyone is dying to know my decision, I've narrowed it to...

- Panaracer gravelking 32mm- good price, good weight, good look, good sidewall durability, decent speed but probably a bit slower im guessing. I have a pair in 28mm and wouldn't call them lighting fast.
- Continental GP 5000 32mm- decent price, good weight, not the greatest sidewall durability, fast.
- WTB Expanse 32mm- decent price, decent weight, good look, probably not the greatest sidewall durability, im guessing decently good speed.
- Soma Vitesse SL 33mm- great price, great weight, good look. Im guessing since its so light, itll have bad sidewall durability and also be fast.

The Soma is tempting due to the cost. Itd be great if its a durable tire, itd be a damn unicorn then. The cost is so good, it could be worth trying out. If the heavier version were just as cheap, I would buy a pair for sure.

I followed the link to the Somas and agree. For that price, it’s worth a shot. But be prepared for roadside repairs at that weight.

Huh. I'd looked at WTB tires (the Exposure, specifically) last year and couldn't find them for less than 80 bucks. Now that I have a road bike that can't clear them, it seems that they've dropped their prices by $20+ across the board.

By a strange coincidence, I just had this open on another window:
https://www.bike-discount.de/en/buy/...g-tyre-1063012

25 euros a pop - that's the cheapest I have seen them.

Came in to post ^^^this. The Panaracer Gravelking (not the Gravelking SK) is certainly as puncture-resistant as a Conti GP5000S and is a very nice all-around tire; I use those on my CAADX.
Not sure I want to open the "is it as fast as...?" can-of-worms, but since I've never used the 32mm Contis I don't really have a firsthand apples-to-apples comparison.
(Arguably since I've never used the 32mm Contis my comment about the GK's puncture resistance should also be taken with a grain of salt. But I'll stand by my comment that 32mm GKs are certainly as puncture-resistant as 23 or 25mm Conti GP5000S, and/or GP4000S II.)

Thread revival.

Took the easy way out and bought some Panaracer GK slick 32mm tires.
They measure out to 31.5 on rims that are 17.5mm internal. Plenty wide since it's on a bike that is ridden 90% paved.

They feel fast enough and comfortable enough. It's a bit of a punt, but for the price they will work well until I find the magical perfect tire.

I've been riding a pair of those for several months, no complaints. I wish you'd buy some GP5000s and compare them. Edit- mine are 32.1mm front and 32.5mm rear on 19mm internal.

What pressures are you guys running? Mind if I ask the weight?

I'm 180 and I've been using 60 front, 70 rear. I feel like I could use even less in front but the rear seems to get squirmy with less. I'm using tubes so I'm cautious with experimentation.

185-190lbs.
I built up the Helix with GK slicks 32c tubeless, 55psi/60psi.
I’m switching to Schwalbe Pro 1s Addix 30c tubeless and will be running those 70psi/75psi.

On my SBC 6061, GK slicks 38c tubeless, 50psi/55psi.

288g, I believe? I remember it was a couple g under the claimed weight.
I am 215#, if thats what you meant for weight.

Ive run em with tubes at 75psi rear and 70psi front. I'm sure that could be lower, but its what I ran gp4k tires at on the bike for the prior few seasons and those always measured out to almost the same width so I know it's safe.

Now available in 25 and 28.

Thanks- its a frame I built in a local class a few years ago. We met Sunday afternoons for a little over a few months and did everything from a full scale hand drawn design, to lug design, to fliling and clean up, to brazing, etc. Classes are small at just 3 of us, and it was neat because we did 3 different styles- me a traditional road bike with 73deg angles, another guy built a dropbar 26" Klunker, and the third guy built a 650b upright internal gear hub belt-drive mixte with split chainstay belt access(low maintenance for his mom). It was cool to see how the different frame styles were designed, worked on, and how challenges were solved.
Paint is done at the shop by the teacher, I just picked the colors and design and he applied it.

Here is the dropbar Klunker
