Another windy return ride, persistent from the east - killing me. If I get low 400's by the end of the weekend, 600 is still possible.

Yes, it is sometimes better to have the bike shop do things. I can do drivetrain cleaning, chain replacement, tires, but I let them do everything else. When you ride as much as I do, things need attention................

I do most of my bike work myself with the exception that if it is an infrequent repair and the tool costs too much. When I go my new used frame, the fork tip has some cracks, rather than risk my life on a compromised fork, I got a new one but I didn't have the tool to remove the lower headset race and I didn't want to bang on a chris king headset with a hammer. The park tool for removing this piece was $185 and it only cost me $10 when I had it removed at the shop that I purchased the replacement fork. I can't remember the last time I took my bike into a shop for work.

I also like to work on my bike, I find it fun.

Even though my arthritis issues limits my work on my bikes sometimes, especially during cool or cold weather , I enjoy working on my bikes .
I'm constantly changing stuff around on them .
Most of my work on bikes is done during the warmer months , unless I get an unexpected flat .
I’ve not found a local shop I trust to work on my bikes .
The new bikes I’ve bought over the years had issues that I had to fix after I got them home and took them for a test ride .

Met my goal today. I’ll see if I can add a few more miles by the end of the month.

I just checked and I’ve also met my yearly goal of 9,000 miles as of today. I’m going to try to get 10,000 by the end of the year.

That’s just amazing! Big congrats on a huge year!

I didn’t keep meticulous records in the early months, but my guess is I’ll finish close to 9,000 with a strong December 😊. Not too shabby.

Not too shabby at all. You’ve lost several days at a time traveling, too, haven’t you?

Yes. I travel between FL and VA. Soon enough, it’ll be too cold to ride in VA. I don’t mind the cold so much as the threat of black ice, which is very hard to spot on those roads.. I’ll be heading up there mid December until Jan, so yes, always lose bike time while on the road.

But I’m hoping for a strong finish this month and to pile on mileage until mid December. We seem to be in this fixed weather pattern of high winds during the day. Definitely makes for a challenging, unenjoyable and sometimes outright dangerous ride.😖.

I always seem to lose most opportunity for riding in the beginning days of the month, which backloads my riding load if I'm to achieve my goal. I'm thankful for this forum and this thread because it provides me the motivation I need to get out there!

Through a fortuitous (for me) snafu in city government, our building was not allowed to be occupied today, or for the rest of the week, so I got the week off (mostly). I seized the opportunity and blasted out a metric century, using my new 12-30 cassette on the rear wheel. Either this cassette is better suited to hill-climbing, or my legs are getting that way, because climbing this route wasn't any big deal, and riding back, against the wind, didn't bother me much. Even with an extra week, I probably still won't make 600. But I'll get closer.

You want real hills? Come ride some of the routes in the Blue Ridge Mtns. It's technical riding at its best. Several weeks back my brother-in-law organized a ride with a bunch of his friends (all from DC) and they collapsed like cards after 20 miles of nice hills, LOL! We had to cut the ride way short.........

Hill climbing certainly works a different set of leg muscles than flats. But here in FL it's been very windy the past week, and this (IMO) is psychologically more difficult than riding the hills (we call them 'invisible hills' here. The hot humid weather has given way to cooler drier, but much windier conditions. And I hope it's not a sign of things to come - there's nowhere to hide and they wear you out quickly.

I'm actually thinking of switching bikes - bringing the plush but fully stacked Domane to VA and the Bianchi (which has a racier geometry) to FL so I can hug the drops and get lower.
