Bib shorts suggestions for the over 60s
Hi,
Any suggestions for bib shorts for over 60s. I am a cyclist with thick legs. Are there shorts that don't make me look strange?

If you're not comfortable with the looks of bibs, you can do a base layer with a chamois and wear regular shorts over them.

I throw out a lot of unsubstantiated stats too. Such as......When I talk with ridiculously dressed people that look me in the eye and converse pleasantly with me, 1 out of 20 times I can't keep a straight face.

Get thee to an LBS and try on some bibs. Forget how they look, find the brand/model that fits your body the way you want it to and has a pad you like.
People look at you funny when you wear your kit, but its just because they can see all your awesomeness. Don't deny them that thrill.

Some thoughts:
Look for some with longer than average legs.
Stick to basic black, no colored panels or designs or graphics.
Look for thicker lycra.
Get an over-sized jersey to detract attention from your shorts.
There's also a lot of variability in how high above your waist the front part comes - lower is better for access to the plumbing - higher might fit your shape better.

Are there any bibs that fit a tall - 6'6" - 60+ thin person without pulling down on the shoulders or jamming the crotch?

Otherwise, you could always use (adjustable) suspenders with non-bib shorts.

Since bibs don't have a tight waistband, there's more leeway in finding the correct size for your particular build. I had Garneau and Sugoi bibs in L, and some really nice Giordanas in the same size that all fit just fine. But a pair of Castellis I had fit great except the straps were just too tight to the point that the seam between uppers and lowers was pulling apart. Fortunately, REI considered it a defect and refunded my money, and I was able to purchase XLs that are OK in the straps but are just a little big in the legs (skinny legs).
The point here is that height/strap length might be more the thing to size by than the typical waist size parameter.

I've always thought that wool shorts look better. They're less "shiny" and thin I guess is the best way to explain it. They don't look like something a girl doing aerobics would be wearing.

With reference to the comments of the previous poster, I have for many years been a fan of merino wool clothing. In particular, I have been a loyal customer of the now defunct company Ibex. I fully agree that wool shorts don't look like something a teenager would use to the gym. Now that Ibex is no more, I guess I am going to have something else.

I'm 6'2" tall, was 290 pounds (now 260). I've had really good luck with Voler. Great quality, made in the USA, free returns, etc. Second choice is Aero Tech Designs. Most of theirs is USA made, too. Good service, big sizes, etc.

Perhaps try Pearl Izumi mid-range bib shorts. Generally, their constructed to be a little accommodating then restrictive. I've also had good luck with bibs by Endura and Voler.
The Sugoi (RS) and Castelli bib shorts I have are more restrictive in material, sizing and strap lengths. Not really a bother for me as I'm 5'8".
