What do you miss most being on the other side of 80?

Well firstly, I'm glad to be alive. So many of my friends and acquaintances are no longer with us. What I missed most is endurance and strength.

Kudos! I only know one guy who has continued significant cycling beyond 80. Another rides an ebike but that's different, obviously. Seems to be a wall at the mid to late 70s. Appears women may finish even sooner, I don't know any who have cycled into their 70s.

This is the time when group cycling begins to "thin out". Solo riding with music to keep you company when doing a 2 hour plus ride.

Saw my PCP yesterday. His opinion is that the cardiologists I've been seeing don't know squat about the athletic heart, mostly because they don't encounter it. We're like really, really rare at this age. He did find a sport cardiologist for me, so maybe I'll get it fixed after all. Meanwhile, I squatted 11 lbs. over bodyweight for 8 reps, heaviest full squats I've ever done in my life. I'm still working on 2 hours of Z2 on my rollers. I'll get there. Took the tandem out for 18 miles of almost flat a few days ago, first tandem ride since my syncope in October. I might make 80 yet.
A few years ago I was at the RAMROD finish when the #1 bib came in, an 80 y.o. guy who looked spectacularly fit. He wasn't all that slow, maybe 2/3 of finishers came in before him. Often the sag vehicles are out searching for #1 after the finish has closed. It gets iffy over 80. There used to be a tandem team who'd ride the course, one 83 the other 80 the last time I saw them on course IIRC. They started a few hours early and came in late. Still, quite the accomplishment. 154 miles, 9,000'.
