I would call this one, "Evocative":

... of what is up to you. Maybe Eroica, maybe your last tweed ride. This one was at the start of the Lake Pepin 3-Speed Tour.

Yeah, I know this is the wrong type of bike for this group but it is 31 years old and the picture is kinda artsy... Plus - the bike matches the mural!

Fresh Pixels At Last!

My knee has finally healed enough to let me ride again. This thread came to mind immediately when I started setting up these shots. The bike itself isn't terribly elegant; it's a purpose-built winter bike. But I can put it into artsy compositions:

1984 Dawes Ranger

Took her out for a shakedown ride yesterday. Beautiful sunshine, 41° F and very little wind. I only had light for about 20 minutes, so these are the only pics I shot:

Hah! That's funny. I just finished reading Bike Snob NYC's blog entry for the day, and that's something he used to make fun of all the time: "What pressure you runnin'?"

Thanks for the compliment. Lighting is the key to all photography. Once you understand how to use that, your photos get a lot better.

I've often said that I'm not a "data-driven cyclist". My job in Aerospace Quality is very technical, so I try to keep math to a minimum in my personal life.

As for how many psi, well, I'm not exactly sure. I tend to use the Olde English approach; on the vintage 3-speeds, the text on the sidewalls of the tires often said something like "INFLATE HARD". Using that scale, and my calibrated grasp, I tend to run these tires "SLIGHTLY SQUISHY". That is, when I squeeze, they give just a little. (Experience tells me this is about 60psi.) On my roadbikes with 28 - 32 mm tires, I use the English HARD setting mentioned above. 650b x 35 - 40mm are somewhere in-between.

Here is a perfect example of "TOO MUCH":

Yeah, that was the first thing I looked for. But the bead wasn't broken. Instead, I found what looked like a razor slash, about 2 inches long, parallel to the bead about a half-inch away. It looked like deliberate sabotage - my favorite taproom along my commute is in a rough neighborhood. But the odd thing is that it didn't flat on the way home. I came out and found this in my shop the next morning!

As for the round profile of the Table Top tires, I'm afraid that's my fault for mounting them on rims that are perhaps a bit too narrow. It doesn't seem to affect the ride adversely; at least not the way I use this bike. The wheels are wonderful - Deore XT hubs with high-quality, lightweight rims that don't have any stickers to identify them. (Another CL score.)

Now, in keeping with the spirit and subject of this thread, here's another gratuitous snapshot:

Indeed! I would have commented on it over there, but it already had about a half-dozen replies by the time I read it.
Considering the subject matter of this forum, it's odd that my eye is immediately drawn to that lone tree, standing there... forlorn? Or defiant?
Or perhaps it's part of a grove in there, but was the only one that appeared in that frame of repeating arches.

The colors are so subdued during this cold season that I find myself wondering how this shot would look in monochrome. Or in color during the summer, or the fall when the leaves turn.
Thanks for sharing that one, ascherer. It's a beauty!

Thanks so much! The location is an urban park in New York City. The arches are part of a long Amtrak railway that spans the Bronx, Manhattan and Queens known as the Hell Gate Bridge. The spaces under them have parks and bike paths and are beautiful in their symmetry. However, it was the light on the tree that stopped me. The location is along one of my standard rides (mile 17.1 here) so a seasonal series is quite possible. I also like your idea of a monochrome or B&W version. I wonder if it will be too flat but I'm going to give it a try.

You photos here are great, and that Dunelt...fantastic! Wish I had room for all the bikes I want/had.
