Carbon fibre damage
Good afternoon everyone,
Hoping to find some knowledgeable assistance before purchase. While looking for a used bike for my girlfriend, we found a suitable bike but it has a small hole in one of the back stays and i am wondering if I should simply 'stay' away .
I've included pictures and I'm hoping someone on here has experience to tell me how critical this is, if it can be repaired safely and at what cost?
I haven't seen the bike as of yet since it's quite a distance away, so I can't say if everything around this small hole has been weakened. Although it all looks solid from the picture
All thoughts are welcome and thanks in advance
Charles

I'd avoid buying a CF frame that has such flaw[s] from a private seller.

I could be wrong, but to me, it looks like the stays might have weave pattern protective material? If so, is the defect in that material, not the stay itself? It looks like a similar ding near the very rear end of the chain stay too.
I wonder if those parts are even carbon fiber - the chain stay and the seat stay (is it called a seat stay - the part that runs from the rear axle area to the suspension pivot).

Man, I wouldn't advise you to get that. Also that bike looks like its had a bunch of ride time. If it weren't for the stay damage, I would strongly advise you to ask them about what kind of service history the suspension had. If that bike company is solvent (the web page is broken and I can't find anything about m2m bikes) its possible they may be able to replace the rear triangle. Also, were it a screaming good deal in every other respect, probably it's the kind of thing a specialist carbon fiber repair shop would be able to repair (relatively) easy. But this is still like hundreds of bucks!
So yeah, don't do it.

I'd definitely avoid any CF with visible damage. It might be OK, maybe. But it also might not be, and if it does fail you'll be left with:
- A useless frame, and a completely lost investment in it
- An upset, likely injured girlfriend

Is that stay replaceable? Find out what the cost is and reduce your offer on the bike by that amount. Otherwise find a bike that needs nothing done to it and has no blemishes.
If you do get it for that reduced offer, then ride it and just watch it. If it ever starts looking like somethings happening, then you will have the cost covered by the price reduction you insisted on with the seller....... right?

Agree with Camilo, the "CF" that I can see looks like an applique onto what is probably an aluminum frame. If so
then I think this is all cosmetic and of little consequence. That assumes the proposed rider is gentle on the bike
and the terrain to be ridden not technical or high speed. The logo on the bike does not ID the maker and at
best refers to a bike shop in the Phillipines.
