Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

A lot of people, even some mechanics, would eyeball it. But Velo Vol broke out the level to make sure it wasn't an optical illusion.

22 degrees this morning. Got all suited up and the wife came down to suggest I go when it’s warmer. Looks like it will be a tropical 45 when I go instead.

The only downside is that you won't get to enjoy those sweet early Sunday morning traffic conditions.

This is very true, plus I really like the way I feel the rest of the day after that early morning ride. 22 is just silly though.

It’s warming up here, but risk of icy roads is still too high. Plan is more fake miles in the dungeon.

You ever wonder how they rolled out the asphalt on the 36° banking at Talladega?

Chain your asphalt roller to a bulldozer running along the top!

Yesterday afternoon I fell on my back while walking across an untreated intersection.

FYI: I noticed that the act of tightening the saddle clam pushes the nose downward. So now my saddle isn't 100% level, but it may be close enough. #MechanicalTips

I'd kill for 45 degrees. With that kind of weather I'd take out the orange bike

It's a "Kurve" saddle and it looks like even when the middle part is flat it won't measure level because the nose bends downward.

One way to tell. My take on it is that if you don't feel like you have to keep skooching back, or like you're really reaching out for the bars, it's correctly set, whether the bubble is exactly centered or not. Plus, so many saddles are not flat across the back, and/or have a dip/recess in the middle, where do you place the level?

In my case, I just made sure that all 4 bikes - which have the same long-discontinued model of saddle - have the bubble in the same place when the level is placed the same. Works for me! Not sure what I'm gonna do about the Cannondale, since it's got an earlier version of the same saddle without a recess......

Too bad that there's nothing to be done about that.

So, trial and error. I'm hardly the first person who's done this.
