I posted above but i am amazed how far many have driven for a bike. Living since 2001 in NC i have made many trips back to Florida and NYS where i lived many years. I did not go on these trip with the intention of buying bikes but it has happened many times . In 1986 we went to Port Crane Ny to stay with relatives near where we had lived . I checked the Binghamton CL and saw a add for a old english racer $50 in Walton NY. Walton is deep in the Catskill mts and it would be a nice 50+ mile ride. The problem was when we drove our 2004 mustang convertible we had agreed no large speakers or bicycles. The bike was a hand built Serotta with 7 speed DuAce. I took it all apart and fitted it into the back seat and boot. Had that bike for over 10 years. Just under 800 one way to get that one. Most of my bike trips were under 30 miles.

In 1972 I drove 450 miles each way to pick up a custom bike frame made to my specifications. I did not trust having it crated and shipped by a freight company as the person building the frame only made 3 each month and had quite a backlog of orders.
With bike purchases in recent years I have stayed with local bike shops within 30 miles of my house. Fortunately there are quite a few excellent shops in my area that sell Scott, Specialized, and Giant bikes which provides a very good selection.

I flew to another city to buy a 90 Miyata 1000LT and from there cycled over 300km to another city to fly back to my city. The cycling part was completely unnecessary and it was fantastic.

Not a bike, but 575 miles R/T for a bike rack for my Boxster. They are $500 new but a guy on the owners' forum no longer needed his and sold it to me for $100 if I would pick it up. Sure! Got up at 3AM and was home by mid-afternoon.

Was a bike for my son last year.
Houston, TX to Springfield, MO, 645 miles and >10 hours each way with an overnight stay in Little Rock AR on the way up (we left after work on a Fri), a dark thirty Sat departure, a meet up in a Home Depot parking lot and turned right around for an evening arrival home.
Done a couple of longer trips for motorcycles: Ocala, FL 893 miles, Omaha NE 899 miles, and Colgate, WI 1175 miles.

I was just the winning bidder on eBay for a Ridekick e-trailer where the auction specified in-person pick-up only from Ventura, CA.

I'm not sure it counts, but I flew from San Jose to get to Princeton NJ to pick up an old high school friends Bob Jackson frame. Was also visiting other friends. However, he never would have gotten around to sending to me... we had been talking about this for a few years.... bike was a low priority for him at this point.

Drove 450-500 miles one way from Atlantic Canada to Boston for this frame. I brought another bike and rode around Cape Cod while down there. Strava says I have 15000 miles on it now but I didn't always use Strava.

Ten years ago, I drove a little less than 100 miles up to Milwaukee to get a bike I really wanted Now, I pick up bikes along the way if I'm traveling somewhere. Picked up a bike about 100 miles away this year, but it was part of a trip. I fully endorse traveling for a bike if you feel like you've gotta have it, though.
Many, many times I've taken the train 30-50 miles out to far suburbs for a bike and ridden home. Might be my preferred method of bike buying.

2 days before serious kidney surgery. Total 191 miles took 6hrs due to me having to stop every 20 miles to pee blood to collect 1965 Raleigh 'Riviera' 3 speed.

I used to travel for work all the time, usually in my work truck. I found several interesting bikes in other cities not close to home. Twice I had flown to Denver area for work and ended up shipping a bike back home before I left. Fun times!

I made a 350 mile 10 hour round trip by train yesterday to pick up a 1988 Raleigh Granada I bought on Ebay, had it been warmer I would have taken my panniers and camping gear like I did when I picked up my Raleigh Royal from 200 miles away and ridden it back, although the final part of that journey was by train due to a very uncomfortable saddle.
